The goat festival of Timau, featuring livestock exhibition, cheeses, and Carnia tradition
In the Timau dialect (Tischlbongarisch) it's called Sunti van Gasa, but for everyone, it's the Goat Festival: in Timau, a hamlet of Paluzza nestled in the upper Val But, it's one of the most characteristic events in the Friulian mountains. For almost forty years, at the end of May, the festival has celebrated the goat farming that has marked the history and economy of the Carnia valleys.
The livestock heart of the event are the local goat exhibition and the regional review of goat products, with a competition and awards for the best cheeses and products. It's an opportunity to get to know the local breeds up close and to appreciate the work of small producers who keep a precious tradition alive.
Tastings are the most anticipated moment: goat cheeses and products to taste and buy, accompanied by Carnia cuisine dishes prepared at the stands. The gastronomic part involves the collaboration of students from Cefap and the regional chefs' association, in a dialogue between tradition and professional training.
In addition to livestock, the Goat Festival offers craft and agri-food markets, itinerant music, chainsaw sculpting demonstrations, entertainment, and an educational farm for the little ones. The Great War Historical Museum remains open in the village, recalling another significant chapter of Timau's history. Promoted by Pro Loco Timau-Cleulis, it's an authentic festival that tells the agro-pastoral soul of Carnia.
The 2026 edition of Sunti van Gasa takes place on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, in Timau. The festival, promoted by Pro Loco Timau-Tischlbong (Timau-Cleulis) in collaboration with local organizations, schools, and associations, confirms its traditional format centered on goat farming and Carnia gastronomy.
With a goat exhibition, a regional review of goat products, tastings, and entertainment, the event celebrates nearly forty years of history.
