The Carnic Ferragosto in Timau, featuring mountain ricotta, tradition, and a linguistic island
While Italy flocks to the beaches, in Timau โ Tischlbong in the local dialect โ Ferragosto tastes of the mountains. A hamlet of Paluzza nestled in the upper Val But, at the foot of Pal Piccolo and Pal Grande, sites of the Great War, Timau celebrates one of its most cherished festivals with Ferragosto Timavese, now over sixty years old.
Timau is a German-speaking linguistic island: its inhabitants speak Timauese (Tischlbongarisch), a dialect of Carinthian origin that arrived here centuries ago with the miners. This peculiar identity also permeates the festival, which coexists with the country's other great traditions, from the archaic Carnival to the Goat Festival, in a calendar that jealously guards the community's memory.
The star attraction is the International Review of Mountain Ricotta: for years, Ferragosto Timavese has been the occasion to taste ricotta produced by the local mountain dairies, paired with krofn, the traditional Carnic fried pastries. The Pro Loco's food stalls complete the offering with dishes from mountain cuisine, while the evenings come alive with music and dancing.
Alongside the gastronomic side and the dancing evenings, the festival retains its religious soul, with a solemn Mass accompanied by the local choir and a procession. In Piazza San Pio X, the heart of the village, moments of folklore, photographic exhibitions, and conviviality alternate: Ferragosto Timavese is the festival where Timau tells its story, welcoming visitors and holidaymakers in the heart of the Carnic summer.
The 2026 edition of Ferragosto Timavese will take place in Timau around the Ferragosto holiday. The precise dates and full program will be announced by Pro Loco Timau-Tischlbong in the weeks prior, following the established structure where Ferragosto is the main day.
Confirmed events include the International Review of Mountain Ricotta with krofn, dancing evenings, and the religious component with a solemn Mass and local choir.
