Two weekends in July dedicated to smoked Sauris ham and the flavors of Carnia
At over 1,400 meters above sea level, in the German-speaking linguistic island of Sauris (Zahre), one of Italy's most unique hams is produced: sweet, soft, and lightly smoked with beech wood scented with juniper and herbs, then aged in the cool air of the Carnic Dolomites. To this product, a symbol of the territory, is dedicated Sauris in Festa – Festa del Prosciutto, the most anticipated gastronomic event of the Sauris summer.
The event takes place over two weekends in July, in Sauris di Sotto. Among the stands, you can taste the smoked ham and other Carnia specialties, while the food market brings together mountain producers. One of the most appreciated experiences are the guided tours of the ham producers, to discover the smoking and aging techniques up close, and to the Zahre brewery, another local excellence.
Alongside tastings, the program offers live music, dancing, visits to the historic center and the medieval church, and moments of insight into the history of the territory, such as the Lumiei dam. The festival is organized by the Sauris-Zahre Business Network with the support of the Municipality of Sauris.
The scent of smoke, Dolomite panoramas, and the hospitality of a unique village: the Ham Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover Sauris and its unmistakable flavors in the heart of summer.
The Sauris Ham Festival 2026 will liven up Sauris di Sotto for two weekends in July, the 11th-12th and the 18th-19th. The star is the ham smoked with beech wood, accompanied by agri-food markets, guided tours of the producers, and moments of music and conviviality.
The detailed program for both days, including times for guided tours, concerts, and gastronomic events, will be published on the official Sauris channels in the weeks leading up to the event. The traditional format includes tasting stands for ham and Carnia specialties, an agri-food market featuring mountain producers, guided tours of the ham producers and the Zahre brewery, and live music and dancing, with possible fireworks displays on Saturday evenings.
How to get there: Sauris di Sotto can be reached by car via the Sauris lake tunnel from Carnia.
Admission: free access to the festival; tastings, guided tours, and purchases are paid.
Accommodation: Sauris offers scattered hotels and accommodation facilities; book in advance during the festival period.
