Tropical greenhouses, biodiversity, and low-impact concerts in Bordano
In Bordano, a small municipality in the Val del Lago in the province of Udine, lies one of Friuli's most evocative natural attractions: the House of Butterflies. In its tropical greenhouses, hundreds of live butterflies from Africa, Asia, and America fly freely in environments that recreate the habitats of three continents. An immersive experience loved by families, schools, and nature enthusiasts.
In addition to the greenhouses, the facility houses the exhibition "Butterflies. 4 lives, 1000 stories", the "6-legged Jewels" collection, the MUFFFA - museum dedicated to lepidoptera collections - and the "PolliNation" garden, a pilot project for urban biodiversity and the valorisation of pollinators. Managed by the Farfalle nella Testa cooperative, the House of Butterflies is a reference point for nature education in the region.
During the season, particularly between July and August, a summer review of low-environmental-impact concerts, thematic workshops, guided excursions, entomological events, and nature talks comes to life. The common thread for 2026 is "Wings for Biodiversity", an invitation to reflect on the role of pollinators for environmental balance and food security.
Bordano is located in an area of great natural value, at the foot of Mount San Simeone and overlooking Lake Cavazzo (or dei Tre Comuni). The House of Butterflies is therefore also the gateway to an authentic corner of the Friulian mountains, ideal for a day of nature, culture, and hiking.
The 2026 season of the House of Butterflies in Bordano reopens on Saturday, March 14th, with the guiding theme "Wings for Biodiversity". Throughout the season, until autumn, the tropical greenhouses are once again open for visits with their hundreds of live butterflies, alongside the permanent exhibitions and the PolliNation garden.
From July, the summer event review comes to life: low-environmental-impact concerts, educational workshops for schools and families on the role of pollinators, guided excursions, entomological events, and nature talks.
