The flavors of the woods in Alta Carnia
Forni Avoltri, one of the northernmost municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia, is located in the upper Degano Valley amidst the Carnic Alps, at the foot of Monte Coglians. Here, every year around the end of July, the Pro Forni Avoltri Tourist Association organizes the Wild Berry Festival, one of the most beloved events of the Carnic summer, dedicated to the blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and currants that grow wild in the local woods.
The absolute protagonists are the wild berries, presented in a thousand ways at the food stalls managed by local associations and restaurateurs: artisanal jams, tarts, strudels, and desserts, flavored liqueurs and grappas, alongside traditional Carnic dishes. All around, the market of local artisanal and agri-food products unfolds, featuring ethnographic exhibitions, demonstrations of ancient crafts, and old-fashioned games.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the nature of Alta Carnia: the program includes guided excursions and walks in the woods, summer biathlon demonstrations by local athletes (Forni Avoltri is home to a historic skiing and shooting tradition), activities for children with face painting and entertainment, exhibitions by local artists, and live music throughout the day. An event that combines taste, mountains, and community identity, supported by the Municipality of Forni Avoltri and the network of Pro Loco associations in Carnia.
The 2026 edition of the Wild Berry Festival is scheduled for the last Sunday of July, the 26th, in Forni Avoltri. As tradition dictates, the day features food stalls with dishes and desserts made from blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and currants, a market of Carnic artisanal and agri-food products, guided excursions in the woods, summer biathlon demonstrations, activities for children, exhibitions, and live music throughout the day.
