The wild herbs of the Friulian Dolomites
Forni di Sopra, an alpine village in Carnia nestled in the heart of the Friulian Dolomites Park (UNESCO World Heritage site), dedicates one of Friuli's most original events to its mountain's biodiversity: the Spring Herbs Festival. For two consecutive weekends in June, trails, museums, squares, restaurants, and conference rooms become the stage for a widespread program that showcases wild herbs, medicinal plants, and traditional knowledge related to their collection.
The heart of the festival includes guided botanical excursions around the village and within the Fornese Ecomuseum, the new Sensory Trail dedicated to medicinal plants and forest elements, and a visit to the Botanical Garden of Forni di Sopra, where local species can be identified. Restaurants and inns in the village offer special menus based on wild mountain herbs, providing an opportunity to discover a cuisine rooted in Carnia tradition.
The program intertwines nature and culture: book presentations, meetings with authors and journalists, reflections on traditions related to the night of San Giovanni and solstice herbs, and art installations. There are also offerings for children, including face painting "Transformations in Color" and sports activities by CONI FVG, as well as evening entertainment with music and DJs. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Forni di Sopra with the Fornese Ecomuseum, is a perfect showcase of the Friulian mountains experienced in a slow and mindful way.
The Spring Herbs Festival 2026 is spread over four days across two weekends, June 13-14 and 20-21, with a program encompassing trails, museums, squares, and restaurants in Forni di Sopra. Between botanical excursions, the new Sensory Trail of medicinal plants, guided visits to the Botanical Garden, and menus based on wild herbs, the event celebrates the biodiversity of the Friulian Dolomites, combining nature, taste, and culture.
