The challenge between the contrade of Paluzza, with cjarogiule and louze, symbols of Carnic effort
Not horses, but wooden carts and sleds: the Palio das Cjarogiules of Paluzza, in the upper Val But, is a palio unlike any other. At its heart are the cjarogiule โ a wooden cart with an axle, wheels, and a drawbar โ and the louze, the sled once used to transport furniture and loads up the slopes. Tools of the daily toil of mountain people, they have become symbols of a festival celebrating Carnic identity.
The contrade into which the territory of Paluzza is divided compete โ about fifteen in total, from Cente to Place, from Somavile to Curcuvint โ each with its own colors and pride. The competition is a test of strength, skill, and community spirit: a good-natured rivalry that keeps the village alive and passes down traditional gestures and knowledge.
The program includes various historical competitions: the Palio dai Fruts for the little ones, the Palio dal fen where women pull cjarogiule loaded with hay, the Palio dal seon with log cutting using a saw, the Palio da Cjame with wood loading, culminating in the main event, the Palio das Cjarogiules. There will also be a solemn Mass, a parade of the contrade, flag-wavers from Palmanova, and drummers.
Accompanying the races is the gastronomic review Golosets, which offers the flavors of Carnia throughout the weekend, along with shows, music, and entertainment for families and children. Promoted by the Cultural Association Giovins di Chenti, the Palio das Cjarogiules is one of the most cherished festivals of the Carnic summer, uniting memory, taste, and fun.
