Two weekends in July featuring handmade strozzapreti and the flavors of Maremma in Sticciano Scalo
In the heart of the Grosseto Maremma, the village of Sticciano Scalo (Municipality of Roccastrada, Province of Grosseto, Tuscany) hosts the Strozzapreti and Maremma Specialties Festival every summer, one of the most beloved and long-standing food and wine festivals in the area. Organized by the Pro Loco of Sticciano, the event takes place over two weekends in July at the multipurpose facility on Via Vecchia, located in a well-equipped area immersed in a picturesque natural park populated by a cork oak forest.
The undisputed stars of the table are the strozzapreti, a type of pasta from the peasant tradition of the Grosseto Maremma made with very simple ingredientsโflour and waterโand crafted entirely by hand. As they have for decades, the local cooks of Sticciano prepare them, lending their culinary skills to the festival evenings. The strozzapreti are served with savory traditional sauces and accompanied on the menu by first courses, meat dishes, and locally produced wines, in a journey that showcases the authentic flavors of the Maremma.
The Strozzapreti Festival is not just about great food: the venue offers all the amenities to enjoy the evening in comfort. Next to the restaurant, you will find a bar, a stage for live music and dancing, a market with craft stalls and local products, as well as a funfair and a children's play area. The setting in the cork oak forest and the proximity to the sea, about twenty minutes away by car, make the festival an ideal stop even for those on vacation in the Maremma.
Born in the nineties, the Strozzapreti Festival is now a staple of the Maremma summer and will reach its 30th edition in 2026. For the Sticciano community, it represents not only a moment of celebration and conviviality but also the main event for promoting the territory and supporting the activities of the Pro Loco. The event is part of the rich calendar of festivals, feasts, and shows that enliven the Municipality of Roccastrada and its villages during the summer, from the main town to Ribolla, from Roccatederighi to Sticciano.
