A summer of theatre, music, and dance by the Teatri di Siena, under the stars of the historic centre
Sboccia l'Estate – Theatre Hits the Streets is the summer festival by the Teatri di Siena, promoted by the Municipality of Siena, which brings the heart of this Tuscan city to life from June to September. For the 2026 edition, scheduled from June 21 to September 11, the artistic direction is led by Vincenzo Bocciarelli, who has chosen the eye as the symbol: a metaphor for a curious, open gaze capable of capturing the city's unique details, emotions, and perspectives.
The strength of Sboccia l'Estate lies in its widespread nature: performances are not confined to a single space but span the most evocative corners of Siena. The most spectacular setting is the world-famous Piazza del Campo, but the programme also inhabits Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Jacopo della Quercia, the Cortile del Podestà, the Arena dell'Acqua at the Fonti di Pescaia, and the city's historic theatres, the Teatro dei Rinnovati and the Teatro dei Rozzi. A new arena with dedicated seating has been set up at the Fonti di Pescaia, reflecting the Municipality's investment in the festival.
The programme weaves together diverse genres to appeal to a wide audience: drama and great classics, musicals, opera, symphonic concerts by academies, jazz curated by Siena Jazz, dance, comedy, and tributes to singer-songwriters. There is also a section dedicated to younger audiences, featuring puppet theatre directed by Italo Pecoretti, bringing shows to the gardens of the Contrade and community spaces. Every evening becomes an opportunity to rediscover Siena from a different perspective, blending historical heritage with live art.
In recent years, Sboccia l'Estate has established itself as one of the most popular cultural events in the province of Siena, Tuscany, attracting tens of thousands of spectators and numerous sold-out evenings. The free-admission formula, combined with the quality of the performances and the beauty of the locations, makes it a staple of the Sienese summer, drawing both locals and tourists in search of culture under the stars.
The 2026 programme of Sboccia l'Estate opens on June 21, on the day of the summer solstice and the Music Festival, and continues until September 11, touching the most scenic locations in Siena: Piazza del Campo, Piazza San Francesco, Piazza Jacopo della Quercia, the Cortile del Podestà, the Arena dell'Acqua at the Fonti di Pescaia, and the historic theatres. The programme alternates between great classics, musicals, opera, jazz, and tributes to Italian song, with a puppet theatre section for children.
These evenings are accompanied by the puppet theatre section for children directed by Italo Pecoretti, with puppet shows in the Contrade gardens and community spaces.
Siena can be reached by car via the Florence-Siena highway (Siena Centro exit) or the SS2 Cassia; the historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL), so it is advisable to leave your car in the parking lots surrounding the walls. By train, the Siena station is connected to Florence and is about a 20-minute walk (or bus ride) from the centre. The performance squares are all located in the heart of the city and are easily accessible on foot.
All performances are free with mandatory reservation (maximum four seats per person) via the Eventbrite platform. For people with disabilities and those over 80, reservations can be made by emailing [email protected] or calling +39 331 2358945.
Bring something to keep you warm: evenings in the square can be cool. Arrive early to find a seat and enjoy the atmosphere of the historic centre at sunset.
