Where wine meets history in the Civic Museums of Volterra
Calici d'Etruria is a summer festival that pairs the tasting of local Volterra wines with the timeless beauty of its Civic Museums. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Volterra in collaboration with the city's museums, features an original format: local winemakers present their wines directly inside the museum spaces, fostering a unique dialogue between oenological tradition and the city's historical and artistic heritage.
The festival's guiding theme is "One glass, a thousand stories": an invitation to discover, savor, and experience Volterra in a new way while celebrating the cultural and productive identity of the region. Each event is an opportunity to pair a fine glass of wine with the Etruscan collections, masterpieces of art, and the medieval architecture that have made the city famous throughout Tuscany and beyond.
The festival consists of several events, each hosted in a landmark of Volterra's heritage:
Some events are enhanced by guided tours that lead participants through the collections, while special evenings such as the White Night at the Acropolis and the Red Night at the Palazzo dei Priori offer evocative social moments. Visitors can thus combine wine tasting with a complete cultural journey in a rare and refined setting.
Perched on a hill between the provinces of Pisa and Siena, Volterra is a true Tuscan gem: a city of Etruscan origin, famous for its alabaster and a layered historical heritage spanning over two millennia. Calici d'Etruria also highlights its oenological dimensionโstill lesser-known compared to other Tuscan areasโby showcasing the wineries and winemakers working in this corner of the region. The festival is designed for residents and visitors alike who wish to experience the city in an authentic and original way.
The first edition of Calici d'Etruria takes place in Volterra from June to September 2026, with five events bringing local wine tastings into the city's Civic Museums. The chosen theme is "One glass, a thousand stories", highlighting the bond between wine and Volterra's rich historical and artistic heritage.
At each stop, local winemakers offer their wines within the museum spaces, while guided tours and themed evenings (White Night at the Acropolis, Red Night at the Palazzo dei Priori) enrich the experience. The festival is organized by the Municipality of Volterra and the Civic Museums.
The Calici d'Etruria events take place in the Civic Museums of Volterra: Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, Art Gallery and Civic Museum, Palazzo dei Priori, and the Etruscan Acropolis, all located in the city's historic center (Province of Pisa).
By car: Volterra is accessible via the SS68 road (from Cecina or Colle di Val d'Elsa); paid parking is available on the outskirts of the historic center (Vallebuona, Docciola, La Stazione). By train + bus: take the train to Saline di Volterra or Pontedera-Casciana Terme station, then a bus to the center. By plane: Pisa (Galileo Galilei) and Florence airports.
Events generally take place from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with special evening sessions. Participation terms and any tasting fees are communicated by the Civic Museums of Volterra. For updated information: call +39 0588 87580 or visit the official website of the Civic Museums.
