The most delicious Christmas tournament in the Val d'Orcia, held under the loggias of Pienza
In the heart of the Val d'Orcia, in Pienza (Province of Siena, Tuscany), there is an event that marks the final week of December each year and is unlike any other Italian festival: the Gioco del Panforte. It takes place under the evocative Loggiato del Palazzo Comunale, in the square designed by Rossellino within the ideal city commissioned by Pope Pius II, turning the iconic Sienese Christmas cake into the star of a challenge that is as fun-loving as it is serious.
The rules are simple but require a steady hand and nerves of steel. Players line up along a long table and take turns sliding the panforte, wrapped in paper, trying to stop it as close to the opposite edge as possible without it falling off: if the panforte slides off the table, the throw is void. A judge measures the distances and awards the point to whoever gets the cake closest to the edge. It is a discipline of precision, strength control, and a pinch of luck, capable of keeping the hundreds of spectators who crowd the loggias every year on the edge of their seats.
The adult tournament features teams from associations and groups across the Val d'Orcia and Valdichiana: in recent editions, up to thirty-two teams have registered. Each squad fields several throwers, with the option of a substitute ready to step in. The competition is structured as a multi-day knockout tournament, culminating in the grand final to crown the champion team.
The Adult Tournament, organized by the Associazione del Gioco del Panforte, is the highlight of a program that brings Pienza to life during the Christmas season, amidst markets, lights, and year-end celebrations. The adult tournament is followed, in the first days of January, by the Junior Tournament dedicated to children and organized by the Pro Loco, confirming how deeply rooted this tradition is and how it is passed down from generation to generation.
Attending the Gioco del Panforte means experiencing an authentic Tuscan Christmas far from the most touristy circuits: the UNESCO World Heritage village decorated for the holidays, the scent of panforte, the good-natured cheering under the Renaissance loggias, and the atmosphere of healthy competition make this event an unforgettable experience for families and curious visitors.
The Adult Tournament of the Gioco del Panforte will be held in Pienza from December 26th to 30th, 2026, as confirmed by the 2026 events calendar presented by the Municipality. The event takes place under the Loggiato del Palazzo Comunale and is organized by the Associazione del Gioco del Panforte.
As per tradition, the challenges kick off on Boxing Day and continue until December 30th with the final and the awarding of the winning team. The tournament will be followed in early January 2027 by the Junior Tournament organized by the Pro Loco.
The detailed program (match times, list of registered teams, side Christmas events) will be announced by the organization closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (day-by-day match calendar, registered teams, times) will be published by the Associazione del Gioco del Panforte in the weeks preceding the event.
