The Epiphany treat of Montelepre, served in the square on January 6th
The Sfincia di Prescia Festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Montelepre, a small town nestled in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in Sicily. Every year on Epiphany (January 6th), the festival transforms Piazzale Portella della Ginestra and the nearby Urban Park into a vibrant hub of flavor and community, drawing hundreds of residents, visitors, and curious travelers.
The sfincia di prescia is a traditional Montelepre pastry, distinct from the classic Sicilian sfincia due to its unmistakable 'e' shape. The term "prescia," in the Sicilian dialect, means haste or urgency, referring to the quick handling required for the dough. These are soft fritters made from flour, milk (or water), sugar, and cinnamon. The dough is rolled out, enriched with eggs, shaped into its signature form, fried, drizzled with honey, and dusted with sugar and cinnamon. It is a treat deeply rooted in the Christmas season and Epiphany, passed down through generations by the town's grandmothers.
The heart of the festival is the tasting of the sfince at the stalls set up in the square, where visitors can sample various versions of the pastry, including gluten-free options. The tasting is complemented by a rich program of entertainment, making it a perfect day for the whole family:
In recent years, the Sfincia di Prescia Festival has taken on a symbolic value that extends far beyond Montelepre. The event is dedicated to Montelepre natives living around the world: through social media live streams and initiatives linked to "roots tourism," emigrants can experience the flavors and memories of their childhood from afar. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Montelepre and organized by the ATMA Association, which has been committed to promoting local traditions for years.
Visiting Montelepre for Epiphany means discovering an authentic Sicilian village, far from the main tourist trails, and savoring a pastry that tells centuries of folk history. The Sfincia di Prescia Festival is the perfect way to conclude the holiday season with a genuine experience filled with good food, human warmth, and living traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Sfincia di Prescia Festival celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the event, confirming its status as one of the most beloved Epiphany traditions in Montelepre. On January 6, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Piazzale Portella della Ginestra hosted the stands for the tasting of sfince, also available in a gluten-free version.
The day, organized by the ATMA Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Montelepre, featured the Elf Village at the Urban Park, an artistic nativity scene in the town churches, visits to the Torre Ventimiglia, roaming music, and the inevitable arrival of the Befana, in a festive setting perfect for families and children.
Montelepre is located inland, about 35 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, taking the Partinico/Montelepre exit. The nearest train stations are in Carini or Palermo, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The festival takes place every year on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, typically from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at Piazzale Portella della Ginestra and the Urban Park.
Admission to the festival is free. Sfince tastings are available via a symbolic ticket that can be purchased at the stalls in the square.
