About Sfincia di Prescia Festival

Every January 6th, on Epiphany, Montelepre celebrates its Sfincia di Prescia Festival, dedicated to the town's signature pastry shaped like the letter 'e'. At Piazzale Portella della Ginestra, visitors can enjoy freshly fried sfince—sweetened with honey, sugar, and cinnamon—while the town comes alive with an Elf Village, artistic nativity scenes, folk music, and the arrival of the Befana. It is a popular celebration of taste, tradition, and local identity, designed to connect with Montelepre natives living all over the world.

The Sfincia di Prescia Festival in Montelepre

The Sfincia di Prescia Festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Montelepre, a small town nestled in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in Sicily. Every year on Epiphany (January 6th), the festival transforms Piazzale Portella della Ginestra and the nearby Urban Park into a vibrant hub of flavor and community, drawing hundreds of residents, visitors, and curious travelers.

What is the sfincia di prescia?

The sfincia di prescia is a traditional Montelepre pastry, distinct from the classic Sicilian sfincia due to its unmistakable 'e' shape. The term "prescia," in the Sicilian dialect, means haste or urgency, referring to the quick handling required for the dough. These are soft fritters made from flour, milk (or water), sugar, and cinnamon. The dough is rolled out, enriched with eggs, shaped into its signature form, fried, drizzled with honey, and dusted with sugar and cinnamon. It is a treat deeply rooted in the Christmas season and Epiphany, passed down through generations by the town's grandmothers.

Festival Program

The heart of the festival is the tasting of the sfince at the stalls set up in the square, where visitors can sample various versions of the pastry, including gluten-free options. The tasting is complemented by a rich program of entertainment, making it a perfect day for the whole family:

  • Elf Village at the Urban Park, featuring activities for children;
  • Artistic Nativity Scene displayed in the town's historic churches;
  • Visits to the Torre Ventimiglia and art and photography exhibitions;
  • Roaming folk music groups performing through the town streets;
  • The highly anticipated arrival of the Befana and the traditional tombolata (bingo).

A festival connecting the town to the world

In recent years, the Sfincia di Prescia Festival has taken on a symbolic value that extends far beyond Montelepre. The event is dedicated to Montelepre natives living around the world: through social media live streams and initiatives linked to "roots tourism," emigrants can experience the flavors and memories of their childhood from afar. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Montelepre and organized by the ATMA Association, which has been committed to promoting local traditions for years.

Why attend

Visiting Montelepre for Epiphany means discovering an authentic Sicilian village, far from the main tourist trails, and savoring a pastry that tells centuries of folk history. The Sfincia di Prescia Festival is the perfect way to conclude the holiday season with a genuine experience filled with good food, human warmth, and living traditions.
