The Sicilian focaccia takes center stage in Torretta on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
The Vastedda Festival is the annual event that, every December 8th, transforms the historic center of Torretta—a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily—into a grand celebration of flavor. The event takes place on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, blending popular devotion with culinary conviviality in one of the most anticipated winter traditions in Sicily.
The absolute star is the vastedda, a traditional Sicilian focaccia that in Torretta is seasoned with fresh extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, caciocavallo, and ricotta. This dish has deep peasant roots: workers once carried it to the fields during the olive harvest, and tradition also holds that young suitors would offer it as a gift during the Immaculate Conception period. The festival honors this collective memory, renewing it each year with thousands of freshly prepared tastings.
The festival was born in 1984 thanks to a group of local youths and has been held annually ever since, reaching its 41st edition in 2025. Over the years, it has become a benchmark for traditional local gastronomy, drawing visitors to Torretta from Palermo and neighboring towns.
Beyond the tastings, the day is enlivened by folk music, traditional performance groups, and the evocative parade of Sicilian carts, a symbol of the island's craftsmanship and folklore. The stalls, entertainment, and widespread joy make the festival a perfect opportunity to discover the identity of a village that proudly preserves its roots.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, located at the foot of the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie in the center of Torretta. Admission is free, and the event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Torretta.
