The Patronal Festival of San Martino delle Scale

In the heart of the mountains overlooking the Conca d'Oro, the mountain village of San Martino delle Scale, in the municipality of Monreale (Province of Palermo, Sicily), dedicates a heartfelt festival to its patron saint, Saint Martin of Tours, every autumn. The festivities, centered around November 11th, revolve entirely around the ancient Benedictine Abbey of San Martino delle Scale, traditionally founded in 1347 by the Blessed Abbot Angelo Sinisio, and represent one of the most significant religious and cultural events in the Monreale area.

The Legend of the Cloak

The festival commemorates the most famous episode in the saint's life: the act of charity where Martin, still a Roman soldier, divided his cloak with a shivering beggar, later recognizing Christ in him. Proclaimed Bishop of Tours by popular acclaim in 371, Saint Martin has been a symbol of solidarity and hospitality for centuries—values that the community of San Martino delle Scale embraces each year through charitable initiatives, food drives for Caritas, and moments of reflection on helping the most vulnerable.

Rites and Highlights

The program intertwines liturgical and popular traditions. Among the most anticipated moments:
