Patronal celebrations in honor of Saint Martin of Tours in the abbey village of San Martino delle Scale
In the heart of the mountains overlooking the Conca d'Oro, the mountain village of San Martino delle Scale, in the municipality of Monreale (Province of Palermo, Sicily), dedicates a heartfelt festival to its patron saint, Saint Martin of Tours, every autumn. The festivities, centered around November 11th, revolve entirely around the ancient Benedictine Abbey of San Martino delle Scale, traditionally founded in 1347 by the Blessed Abbot Angelo Sinisio, and represent one of the most significant religious and cultural events in the Monreale area.
The festival commemorates the most famous episode in the saint's life: the act of charity where Martin, still a Roman soldier, divided his cloak with a shivering beggar, later recognizing Christ in him. Proclaimed Bishop of Tours by popular acclaim in 371, Saint Martin has been a symbol of solidarity and hospitality for centuriesโvalues that the community of San Martino delle Scale embraces each year through charitable initiatives, food drives for Caritas, and moments of reflection on helping the most vulnerable.
The program intertwines liturgical and popular traditions. Among the most anticipated moments:
To ideally close each day of celebration, there is the distribution of San Martino biscuits, typical Sicilian sweets associated with the saint's feast day, to be enjoyed with a glass of moscato: a delicious ritual that combines devotion and conviviality, marking the arrival of autumn in the abbey village for generations.
Beyond the festival, San Martino delle Scale offers the chance to discover a lush, cool corner of Sicily, nestled in the woods behind Palermo and Monreale. The Abbey, an authentic treasure trove of art and history, and the intimate atmosphere of the village make these November days an experience that blends spirituality, culture, and popular traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Martin of Tours Festival in San Martino delle Scale, in the municipality of Monreale, is scheduled from November 9th to 11th, 2026. The detailed program, with daily schedules and events, has not yet been published by the organizers.
Following the custom of previous years, the festivities will unfold around the Benedictine Abbey with solemn liturgical celebrations, the historical re-enactment of the saint's passing, the procession of the relic along the monastery corridors, the blessing of the animals, and the distribution of traditional San Martino biscuits accompanied by moscato wine, alongside moments of conviviality and solidarity initiatives.
San Martino delle Scale is a mountain village in the municipality of Monreale (PA), accessible by car from Palermo and Monreale along the road that climbs toward the woods. By train or plane, you arrive in Palermo, from where you continue by road.
The festivities take place in November, around the feast of Saint Martin (November 11th). The 2026 edition is scheduled from November 9th to 11th.
Some events, such as guided tours of the Abbey and the community dinner, may require reservations. We recommend wearing clothing suitable for the cool mountain climate.
