About Festival of the Dead

In Monreale, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the Festival of the Dead transforms Piazza Guglielmo II into a festive village between late October and early November. It is a joyful, family-oriented reinterpretation of the ancient Sicilian custom of the Dead: stalls featuring traditional sweets like pupaccena and frutta di martorana, live music, performances, and a Kids Area designed for the little ones. A bridge between generations that weaves together memory, tradition, and fun in the shadow of the famous Norman Cathedral.

The Festival of the Dead in Monreale

In the town of Monreale, overlooking the Conca d'Oro just a few kilometers from Palermo, the Festival of the Dead renews one of Sicily's most heartfelt traditions every year. The event takes place in Piazza Guglielmo II, the monumental square at the foot of the extraordinary UNESCO-listed Norman Cathedral, turning the historic center into a large village dedicated to families and collective memory.

A reinvented Sicilian tradition

In Sicily, the night between November 1st and 2nd has always been linked to children: according to custom, it is the morti (the deceased relatives) who bring sweets and small gifts to the little ones. The Monreale event recovers this profound meaning and transforms it into a choral celebration, capable of uniting faith, remembrance, and popular festivities. As the organizers point out, the goal is to "create a bridge between generations," giving the occasion a cheerful face shared by the entire community.

Traditional sweets and food stalls

The heart of the festival lies in the stalls dedicated to traditional Sicilian sweets. Highlights include pupaccena (or pupi di zucchero), the colorful sugar figurines that grandparents give to their grandchildren, and frutta di martorana, the famous almond paste molded and painted to look like fruit. There is no shortage of other island pastry specialties to enjoy while strolling among the stalls.

Performances, music, and Kids Area

The program alternates between live music, entertainment, and shows suitable for all ages. A large space is reserved for children with a Kids Area full of cartoon mascots, creative workshops, animated film screenings, games, and themed sets. Admission is free, and the hours cover the entire day, from morning until evening.

Monreale, between art and tradition

Experiencing the Festival of the Dead is also an opportunity to discover Monreale, a jewel of Sicily and the Metropolitan City of Palermo, world-famous for its Cathedral and Byzantine mosaics. The event is part of a calendar of activities that brings the Norman town to life throughout the year, enhancing its cultural identity.
