The patronal feast of Silvi Paese and the fire ritual

The festivities in honor of San Leone, the patron saint of Silvi, are among the most heartfelt and iconic popular events on the Teramo coast in Abruzzo. The highlight is Lu Ciancialone, the great propitiatory bonfire that illuminates Piazza Largo della Porta every year on the last Sunday of May, nestled between the church of San Salvatore and the street winding around the ancient medieval village of Silvi Paese, in the municipality of Silvi (province of Teramo).
The tradition dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, commemorating the village's defense against Turkish raids along the Abruzzo coast. According to legend, a young man named Leone confronted the invaders brandishing a torch: the light was so intense that the raiders believed they were facing an entire army, forcing them to retreat toward the sea. In memory of that event, and the cult of San Leone introduced by Dulcignotti refugees who settled in Silvi, the community still lights the great fire today. Beyond its religious and commemorative value, it serves as an ancient purifying rite, linked to spring propitiatory fires and the protection of crops.
In the days leading up to the festival, locals gather and bind hundreds of reeds to form a massive bundle, which can reach several meters in height. On the evening of the festival, the bundle is transported to the square and hoisted with ropes and ladders in front of the church, with the collective participation of the villagers. A young local, traditionally preferably named Leone, climbs to the top to light Lu Ciancialone: the fire then burns until it turns to ash, while people sing and dance around it.
The festivities typically span several days, blending religious, civil, and social dimensions:
Organized by the Municipality of Silvi in collaboration with the parish and local associations, the San Leone festival represents a defining identity event for the entire Silvi community and a precious opportunity to discover the charm of the medieval village overlooking the Adriatic.
The 2026 edition of the San Leone festivities and the Ciancialone ritual in Silvi Paese (province of Teramo, Abruzzo) is expected, as per secular tradition, around the last Sunday of May. At the time of publication, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the Municipality of Silvi and the parish. As every year, the heart of the festival will be the lighting of Lu Ciancialone, the massive bundle of reeds raised in Piazza Largo della Porta and set ablaze at dusk, preceded by the solemn mass, the procession with the saint's bust, the brass band concert, and dialect theatre. Information will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
