The patron saint festival of Città Sant'Angelo blending faith, the Grape Festival, and street performers

In late September, the historic center of Città Sant'Angelo—an elegant hilltop village in the province of Pescara overlooking the Adriatic and listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy—gathers to honor its patron, Saint Michael the Archangel. The Patronal Feast and Festival of Forgiveness is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the local community. Celebrations revolve around the monumental Collegiate Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, a masterpiece of Abruzzese architecture rebuilt in the 14th century and granted the title of collegiate church in 1353, featuring its long portico with pointed arches and a 14th-century portal from the Atri school.
The name of the festival is no coincidence: for centuries, devotion to the Archangel, the conqueror of evil, has been linked to the pursuit of forgiveness and reconciliation. As early as the 1500s, the chapel dedicated to Saint Michael in the local collegiate church was consecrated with the granting of plenary indulgences. Today, the spiritual dimension of the "Forgiveness" still accompanies the secular festivities, with solemn masses, processions, and the active participation of the community.
For over thirty years, the religious festival has been accompanied by the Grape Festival, one of the most beloved events in the area, celebrating the harvest and the bounty of the land. The highlight is the parade of allegorical floats decorated with grape clusters and seasonal produce, accompanied by tastings of wines and typical products from local farms, including unique local specialties like gelato flavored with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine and extra virgin olive oil.
The most spectacular side of the festival is La Notte del Birillo, an international street performer festival that fills the alleys and squares with clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and visual performances. The program is rounded out by concerts, the national San Michele d'Oro award, a rally of vintage Fiat 500s and classic cars, markets, workshops for children, and themed menus in the village's eateries. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the historic center of Città Sant'Angelo in the heart of Abruzzo, amidst faith, tradition, and conviviality.
The Patronal Feast and Festival of Forgiveness of Saint Michael the Archangel returns to Città Sant'Angelo, as every year, in late September, close to the patron saint's solemnity on September 29. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the municipal administration.
Based on recent editions, the event is expected to feature religious celebrations at the Collegiate Church, the Grape Festival with its parade of allegorical floats, the Notte del Birillo with street performers, the San Michele d'Oro award, concerts, and tastings in the historic center. The detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Città Sant'Angelo in the weeks leading up to the event.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Città Sant'Angelo (PE), centered around the Collegiate Church of Saint Michael the Archangel and the village squares.
Città Sant'Angelo is easily accessible from the A14 Pescara Nord-Città Sant'Angelo motorway exit, located just a few kilometers away. The nearest train station is in Pescara, which is connected to the village by local bus lines.
