Celebrating the farming heritage of wheat threshing in the Sant'Agnese district of Città Sant'Angelo
The Threshing Re-enactment takes place in Sant'Agnese, one of the rural districts of Città Sant'Angelo, a hilltop village in the province of Pescara recognized as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" and a member of the Cittaslow network. Here, amidst the vineyards and olive groves covering the hills, wheat was the heart of the economy and daily life for centuries. The event was created to preserve the memory of that world of shared toil, threshing floors, and hay sheaves, passing it on to those who never experienced it.
The highlight of the day is the wheat threshing, reconstructed using traditional tools and methods. Ears of wheat, gathered into sheaves and loaded onto old carts, are processed by a thresher powered by vintage tractors, while farmers pass the bundles with pitchforks in a collective ritual dictated by ancient rhythms. The district community gathers around the machine in an atmosphere that mixes work, celebration, and oral storytelling of Abruzzo's rural civilization.
The Threshing Re-enactment is organized by the S. Agnese and S. Agata Festival Committee, the same group that enlivens the social and religious life of the district. The threshing demonstration is accompanied by the conviviality of the rural table and typical local flavors, in a day designed for families and those wishing to rediscover the rhythms and tastes of yesteryear.
The event is part of the Summer in Città Sant'Angelo calendar, a rich program that brings concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and traditional events to the village and its districts from June to September. The Threshing Re-enactment represents its most authentic and earth-bound soul, attracting curious visitors and enthusiasts from the nearby coastal and inland areas of Pescara.
