The oldest patronal feast in Pineto, held in the medieval village of Mutignano
The Sant'Ilario Festival is considered the oldest patronal feast in the Pineto area, in the province of Teramo. For over three hundred years, it has been celebrated in the small medieval village of Mutignano, a hillside hamlet overlooking the Atri badlands and the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo. Every year, at the end of September, the community unites around its identity and the figure of its patron saint in an event that blends religious devotion, music, and folk traditions.
Perched at just over three hundred meters above sea level, Mutignano preserves the atmosphere of ancient Abruzzo villages, with its stone houses and narrow alleys overlooking the Atri hills. The heart of the festival is the church of San Silvestro, a medieval building in Romanesque brick style, expanded over the centuries and enriched with valuable works such as the altarpiece by the Renaissance painter from Abruzzo, Andrea De Litio. It was here that the cult of Sant'Ilario was introduced in the 15th century; his relics were translated from Rome in 1682 through the efforts of the Duke of Atri, Giangirolamo Acquaviva, sparking the devotion that still animates the village today.
The festival program combines sacred moments with popular entertainment. Religious celebrations take place in the church of San Silvestro and culminate in the procession with the relics of Sant'Ilario through the village streets, accompanied by brass bands that brighten the days as they march through Mutignano. Alongside the religious services, there are entertainment events deeply cherished by the community:
Included in the summer program of the Municipality of Pineto, the Sant'Ilario Festival traditionally represents the conclusion of the long summer event season in Pineto. For the inhabitants of Mutignano and the many visitors who climb up to the village, it is an opportunity to rediscover an authentic piece of hilly Abruzzo, amidst faith, historical memory, and conviviality. Its multi-centennial continuity makes it one of the most vibrant testimonies of popular traditions in the province of Teramo.
The Sant'Ilario Festival returns to Mutignano di Pineto on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, 2026, ideally closing the summer season of the Municipality of Pineto. The dates are confirmed by the official Pineto Summer 2026 calendar, with evening events starting at 9:30 PM. As per tradition, the festival will alternate religious moments in the church of San Silvestro with music, the procession with the saint's relics, and the village's folk traditions. The full program of times and artists will be released by the organizers closer to the event.
The festival is held in the village of Mutignano, a hillside hamlet of Pineto (TE), around the church of San Silvestro. Events take place mainly in Piazza San Silvestro and along the streets of the historic center.
