The fire ritual and the Li Faegn historical pageant in the historic center of Atri

Every year, in the town of Atri, in the province of Teramo (Abruzzo), the evening of December 7th and the dawn of December 8th—the eve and day of the Immaculate Conception—host The Night of the Faugni, one of the oldest and most deeply felt celebrations in the entire region. For over twenty years, the event has transformed the medieval historic center into a sprawling stage for music, performances, tastings, and propitiatory rites, drawing over ten thousand residents and tourists each year.
The tradition of the Faugni has its roots in pre-Roman times, when Atri was the capital of the southern Picenum. Fires were lit before the winter solstice to honor Faunus, an ancient pagan deity protecting shepherds, flocks, and agriculture, associated with the fertility of the land. With the advent of Christianity, the ritual was reinterpreted and linked to the translation of the Holy House from Nazareth to Loreto, creating a perfect fusion of sacred and profane that still characterizes the festival today. The Abruzzo Region has officially recognized the event as part of its intangible cultural heritage.
The centerpiece of the event is Li Faegn, the procession that comes to life at 5:00 AM on December 8th, at the solemn tolling of the great bell. Bundles of dry reeds, tightly bound with wicker or wire and set ablaze, are carried in a procession by people of all ages along the streets of the historic center, led by the town band, before being thrown into the still-burning bonfire in Piazza Duomo. It is a striking spectacle that unites the entire community under the sign of purifying fire and good omens.
The long night of December 7th begins with the lighting of the Sacred Fire in Piazza Duomo and the blessing, continuing until dawn with concerts, fire shows, street performers, and DJ sets spread across Piazza Duchi d'Acquaviva, Corso Elio Adriano, Piazza Martella, and Piazza San Pietro. There are also cultural moments dedicated to transhumance, ancient wool routes, and tastings of local products, hosted in the Roman Cisterns and the Cloister of Palazzo Acquaviva.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Atri, one of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo, with its Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the frescoes by Andrea De Litio, and the evocative landscape of the calanchi (badlands). The Night of the Faugni is the best way to experience the most authentic soul of the town and the Teramo tradition.
The 2026 edition of The Night of the Faugni in Atri is expected, as per tradition, around the night between December 7th and 8th. At the moment, the organization has not yet released confirmed dates, program, or line-up: information will be updated as soon as it is published by the promoters.
