The historic polenta feast in the village of Guardistallo, between Cecina and Volterra
The Guardistallo Polenta Festival, known to all as the Polentata, is one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic celebrations in the Province of Pisa. For more than fifty years, on the second weekend of October, the hilltop village of Guardistallo transforms into a grand, convivial gathering dedicated to one of the most authentic dishes of Tuscan peasant cuisine: polenta.
Nestled between Cecina and Volterra, in a panoramic position overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Guardistallo is a small Tuscan town that makes this event the highlight of its year. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Guardistallo, which, thanks to this event, has become a member of the National Association of Polenta Makers of Italy, an organization that unites delegations from Italian villages tied to the tradition of polenta.
The heart of the festival is, naturally, the polenta, prepared according to traditional recipes and served hot at the food stand set up at the Piazzale delle Feste, a covered venue offering a splendid view of the countryside and the sea. There are two classic pairings, both symbols of local cuisine:
There is also the "polenta snack," a smaller portion designed for those who want to taste the specialty while strolling through the village streets. This rustic cuisine is paired with local wines and typical products in a simple, authentic setting.
Alongside the gastronomic offerings, the Polentata features an entertainment program that enlivens the evenings and days of the weekend: live concerts, dance music with orchestras and DJs, marching bands roaming the historic center, and, on Sunday morning, a mountain bike ride to explore the hills surrounding Guardistallo. It is a festival that brings generations together and attracts visitors from across the Pisan coast and the hinterland.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Guardistallo, a village that has recently enhanced its agricultural identity by joining the Cities of Oil circuit and promoting its municipal designation (De.C.O.) products. The Polentata thus fits into a broader path of protecting and promoting local culinary tradition, which attracts food lovers and curious visitors to the heart of Tuscany every year.
The 2026 edition of the Guardistallo Polentata confirms the appointment for the second weekend of October, with stands opening at the Piazzale delle Feste on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th. Once again, the star will be traditional polenta, served with wild boar ragù and mushroom sauce. The full calendar of musical and entertainment initiatives is currently being defined and will be announced by the Pro Loco of Guardistallo closer to the event.
