Handmade pappardelle with Maremma wild boar ragù, the heart of the Ferragosto celebrations in Monteverdi
When the Maremma hills light up with summer evenings, Monteverdi Marittimo, a small town in the Province of Pisa bordering the Val di Cecina, prepares for one of its most beloved celebrations: the Maremma Wild Boar Pappardelle Festival. Organized by the Monteverdi Pro Loco with the support of the local municipality, the event traditionally takes place in mid-August, around the Ferragosto holiday, and has become an unmissable classic of the local summer season.
At the heart of the festival is a dish that embodies the identity of the inland Maremma: handmade pappardelle, rolled out by the town's cooks and served with succulent Maremma wild boar ragù and stew. This fresh, homemade pasta is paired with traditional rural recipes in a menu that celebrates the flavors of the land and its forests. It is a communal village table where local cuisine becomes a story and a shared memory.
The festival is about more than just food: every evening, a different musical group enlivens the square with music and dancing, turning the festival area into a large open-air ballroom. It follows the classic Tuscan festival format, where different generations gather around long tables, amidst the aroma of ragù and the tunes of dance orchestras. It is a genuine opportunity to experience the conviviality and hospitality of the Monteverdi community.
The event is held in the Piazza Falcone Borsellino Festival Area (formerly Piazza San Rocco), in the center of Monteverdi Marittimo. The village, nestled among the wooded hills of the Maremma hinterland in Tuscany, is an ideal starting point for discovering the Val di Cecina, its traditions, and its food and wine.
Beyond the pleasure of dining, the Pappardelle Festival is an important opportunity to promote the culture, history, and territory of the Maremma hills. Over the years, the festival has hosted initiatives dedicated to highlighting local cuisine and typical products, cementing its status as one of the defining events in the summer calendar of Monteverdi Marittimo.
