A night in the Middle Ages through the streets of the painted village of Alpe Cimbra
The Medieval Dinner in Guardia is a food and wine event and historical re-enactment that transports the ancient village of Guardia—a small hamlet in the municipality of Folgaria, on the Alpe Cimbra in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige)—back in time. For one night, the lights grow warmer, and the streets fill with sounds, scents, and people in period costumes: the village pauses its present and becomes a true medieval town.
There is no single place to sit: the dinner is experienced by moving through the streets of the village, discovering step by step tables laden with dishes inspired by tradition, street performances, music, and actors animating every corner of the town. It is a unique way to dine, where food intertwines with festivities, period costumes, and the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
The setting could not be more perfect. Guardia is famous as "the painted village": on the facades of its houses, there are over thirty-five murals, created during mural art festivals held since 1988, which tell stories of peasant traditions, mountain labor, and local legends. A true open-air art gallery. The village is the home of the artist Cirillo Grott, a sculptor, painter, and poet who gathered a circle of art and culture figures here.
An ancient village of Cimbrian origin, Guardia owes its name to the tradition that it served as a guard post for Castel Beseno, the largest fortified complex in Trentino. Nestled on the side of the Rio Cavallo valley, at the foot of Mount Finonchio, the village still preserves the intimate atmosphere of mountain towns, making it the ideal backdrop for bringing an authentic medieval setting to life.
The event is organized by the Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board (Folgaria, Lavarone, Luserna, Vigolana). For the detailed program, times, menu, and participation details for the 2026 edition, it is recommended to contact the tourist office (tel. +39 0464 724130, [email protected]) or visit the official website alpecimbra.it.
The Medieval Dinner in Guardia returns in 2026 with an appointment set for Saturday, July 18, in the evocative painted village of Guardia, a hamlet of Folgaria (Alpe Cimbra, Trentino-Alto Adige).
As per tradition, the event does not take place in a single location but is experienced by walking through the streets of the village: tables laden with dishes inspired by the cuisine of the past, costumed performers, music, and roving entertainment animate every corner of the village. The detailed program, times, and booking methods will be communicated by the Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board closer to the event.
Guardia is a hamlet of Folgaria, on the Alpe Cimbra, about 10 km from the center of Folgaria. By car, it can be reached from the A22 Brenner motorway (Rovereto Nord exit) by driving up towards the plateau. The nearest train station is Rovereto, which is connected by bus services.
The village is explored on foot along alleys and stairways: comfortable footwear is recommended. To participate in the Medieval Dinner, booking through the Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board (tel. +39 0464 724130, [email protected]) is advised. There are numerous accommodation facilities in Folgaria and on the plateau.
