Christmas in Rovereto: lights, markets, and the tolling of the Bell of the Fallen
Rintocchi di Luce – Christmas in Rovereto is the festive event that brings the historic center of Rovereto to life every year in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. From late November until Epiphany, the city becomes a trail of lights, markets, and installations, where tradition and modernity coexist under a theme deeply rooted in Rovereto: peace. The name itself refers to the tolling of the Maria Dolens Bell of the Fallen, which rings every evening to commemorate the victims of all wars.
The commercial heart of the event consists of the wooden chalets of the market, set up along Via Roma, in the Cortile Urbano, and in the Largo Vittime delle Foibe area. Amidst the scent of pine resin, local products, and Trentino crafts, visitors can stroll through dozens of stalls dedicated to gift ideas and gastronomic specialties. Palazzo Todeschi hosts the Christmas Market, a selection of excellent craftsmanship and design, while the Taste Area offers the delicacies of winter cuisine.
Rintocchi di Luce is more than just a market: the city hosts an ice rink, the traditional tourist train, street performances, creative workshops, and Christmas choirs. The Children's Village, featuring the House of Creative Elves and the Enchanted Garden, is designed for families, while the Monumental Nativity Scene Exhibition in the Sala Iras Baldessari takes visitors on a journey of art and tradition. There is also the Solidarity Island, dedicated to local associations.
The strength of the event lies in its reach: illuminations light up the historic streets and palaces, squares fill with events, and the Maria Dolens Bell watches over from the top of Colle di Miravalle. The event is promoted by the Rovereto, Vallagarina and Monte Baldo Tourist Board, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rovereto and the Rovereto in Centro Consortium.
The 2026 edition takes place from November 20, 2026, to January 6, 2027. The market inauguration is scheduled for November 22 in Largo Vittime delle Foibe, while the following day, November 23, the large Christmas tree in Piazza Rosmini will be lit up with local choirs. The wooden chalets are set up along Via Roma and in the Cortile Urbano.
Among the most anticipated events is The Piano Sky, scheduled for December 23: a piano suspended several meters above the ground with an evocative musical performance. December 24 marks the arrival of Santa Claus, while on January 6, the center welcomes the Epiphany character. There is also the ice rink at Corso Rosmini, the tourist train, the Christmas Market at Palazzo Todeschi, and the Children's Village.
Rovereto is served by the A22 Brenner motorway (Rovereto Sud or Rovereto Nord exit) and the Brenner railway line, with the station just a few minutes' walk from the historic center. By car, it is recommended to use the peripheral parking lots.
The market is open Monday to Thursday from 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM and Friday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The food area is open daily until 8:30 PM. Closed on December 25th.
Free admission to the historic center and markets. Some attractions (ice rink, tourist train) may have a fee. Info: Tourist Board, tel. +39 0464 430363.
