Traveling opera across the Valsugana valley and the Vigolana Plateau
The Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival is a traveling opera series that traverses the towns of the Valsugana valley and the Vigolana Plateau, in the province of Trento, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Conceived and produced by the Belcanto Academy APS under the artistic direction of soprano Francesca Micarelli, the festival transforms thermal squares, ancient parish churches, castles, and auditoriums into stages for opera, bringing the general public closer to a heritage often perceived as distant.
The formula is as simple as it is ambitious: all events are free of charge and feature young international artists selected for the Belcanto Academy Opera Studio advanced training program. Singers, pianists, and, on select evenings, the Young OperaLab Orchestra perform a program ranging from the most famous arias and duets to complete productions of major repertoire titles.
The festival involves several of the most evocative locations in eastern Trentino: Levico Terme, Pergine Valsugana, Grigno, Borgo Valsugana, Roncegno Terme, Castel Ivano, Castello Tesino, Calliano in the Vallagarina valley, and the Vigolana Plateau, where the concert is held in Vigolo Vattaro. Each evening engages with its host location: the Palazzo delle Terme in Levico, castle halls, churches, and auditoriums become natural scenography that enhances the voice and the music.
The festival is realized in close collaboration with local municipal administrations and with the support of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Trentino-Alto Adige Region. The festival has been awarded the Eco Eventi Trentino label, testifying to its commitment to environmental sustainability.
For opera enthusiasts and those approaching this world for the first time, the Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival is a rare opportunity to hear great live music in an alpine setting with a strong identity.
The fifth edition of the Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival consists of thirteen free events from June to December 2026, under the artistic direction of Francesca Micarelli. The central theme is the 500th anniversary of the Peasant War, the famous revolt of rural classes against the clergy and feudal power that marked the territory in the 16th century.
The festival opens on June 30 with the inaugural concert "Opera under the stars" at the Palazzo delle Terme in Levico, followed on July 1 by "Intrigues and power within the manor walls" at Castel Ivano. The festival continues in September with stops in Vigolo Vattaro (September 15, Vigolana Plateau), Grigno (September 16), Roncegno Terme (September 17), and Levico Terme (September 18, with the Young OperaLab Orchestra), before reaching Calliano (November 12) and Borgo Valsugana (November 15) in November.
The grand finale is dedicated to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", in an innovative production set in the Valsugana valley, with five performances from December 9 to 13 in Borgo Valsugana, Castel Ivano, Tezze, Castello Tesino, and Pergine Valsugana. Featuring the young international artists of the 2026 Belcanto Academy Opera Studio.
The Vigolana Plateau stage is held in Vigolo Vattaro, at the Comprehensive Institute Auditorium. Other concerts take place in the towns of the Valsugana valley (Levico Terme, Borgo Valsugana, Roncegno Terme, Grigno, Castel Ivano, Castello Tesino, Pergine Valsugana) and in Calliano.
The Vigolana Plateau can be reached by car from Trento in about 20 minutes. The Valsugana valley is served by the Trento-Venice railway (Valsugana line) and the SS47 state road.
All events are free of charge. It is recommended to check the times and venues for each individual concert, as the festival is itinerant.
