Summer opening of the Austro-Hungarian fortress on the hill between Lake Levico and Lake Caldonazzo
Perched at an altitude of approximately 608 meters on the hill separating Lake Levico from Lake Caldonazzo, Forte di Tenna (known in German as Werk Tenna) stands as one of the most significant examples of Austro-Hungarian military architecture in the Trentino region. Constructed between 1884 and 1890, when Trentino was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the fort was designed as an advanced outpost of the Trento fortress. Together with the nearby Forte San Biagio, it controlled access to the Valsugana valley, forming a formidable pincer-like defensive barrier.
Every summer, in the municipality of Tenna, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige region), the monument is made accessible to visitors thanks to the efforts of APT Valsugana Lagorai and the local municipality. This is not a short-lived event, but a prolonged opening that spans the entire summer tourist season, allowing families, history enthusiasts, and hikers to easily incorporate a visit into a day spent at the lake or in the mountains.
The structure, built from squared stone blocks and spanning two floors, featured an armament now documented by information panels along the visitor route: howitzers in armored domes, a firing observatory, and cannons. At the outbreak of the First World War, the fort—by then considered obsolete—was disarmed, yet it continued to play a vital role as a support point for the infantry and as an observation post, ensuring communication between the Forte di Vezzena and the regional command.
Forte di Tenna can be visited in two ways:
This activity is included in the Valsugana Guest Card and is also suitable for groups and school trips. Tours are available in Italian and English.
A visit to the fort integrates perfectly with the tourism offerings of Valsugana: the two swimmable lakes of Levico and Caldonazzo, the hiking trails, the Valsugana cycle path, and the local culinary traditions make Tenna an ideal base for a holiday combining nature, history, and relaxation.
For the 2026 summer season, Forte di Tenna is open to the public from July 1 to September 27. Hours vary by day: Monday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 to 13:00. The fort remains closed on Tuesdays.
Guided tours are available on Mondays and Saturdays (morning and afternoon) and Thursday mornings, in both Italian and English. Those who prefer may visit the fortress independently by following the informative route.
The activity is organized by APT Valsugana Lagorai in collaboration with the municipality of Tenna and is included in the Valsugana Guest Card.
