The Vin Santo festival in the village of Montefollonico, featuring tastings and the competition for the best homemade Vin Santo.
Perched on a hill bordering the lands of the Vino Nobile and the Valdichiana Senese, Montefollonico is a small hamlet in the municipality of Torrita di Siena, in the province of Siena, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. For over twenty years, this medieval stone village has been known as the "Village of Vin Santo": it is here that "Would You Like a Drop of Vin Santo?" takes place, a festival celebrating the famous sweet meditation wine, a symbol of hospitality and rural conviviality.
The event's name stems from a ritual phrase that once accompanied the offer of a small glass of this precious nectar to honored guests, poured sparingly directly from the caratello (small barrel). A gentle, almost ceremonial formula that tells the story of the value Tuscan families have always placed on their Vin Santo better than any brochure.
The beating heart of the festival is the "Best Homemade Vin Santo" competition, which attracts dozens of amateur producers from the area every year: the 2025 edition saw 78 participants. A panel of experts tastes the entries anonymously and draws up two separate rankings, one for sweet Vin Santo and one for dry Vin Santo. The awards ceremony, the most awaited moment of the festival, takes place during a gala dinner.
During the event, the village comes alive with stalls and cellars: you can taste amateur Vin Santos along the streets of the historic center, visit places usually closed to the public, stroll through local farmers' markets and craft stalls, and sample traditional local dishes. There are also guided tours of the village and its churches, guided tastings of DOC Vin Santo, and excursions along the famous Vin Santo Trail, which connects Torrita di Siena to Montefollonico through vineyards and olive groves.
The festival combines food, wine, culture, and folklore: traditional events include the Ruzzolata dei caratelli (a race where children roll small barrels through the village streets), the Tiro al Panforte (Panforte throwing game), conferences and meetings on the art and history of Vin Santo production, live concerts, and themed dinners featuring culinary pairings between Tuscany and other Italian regions.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Montefollonico with the patronage of the Municipality of Torrita di Siena, after several spring editions, the event returns to its most authentic period: the first weekend of December. As the organizers point out, it is in this month that the barrels are drained to make room for the new musts, and Vin Santo confirms itself as the "holiday wine," a symbol of sharing and memory.
After several spring editions, the 21st edition of "Would You Like a Drop of Vin Santo?" returns to its most authentic period, the first weekend of December (December 4-6, 2026). As the organizers of the Pro Loco of Montefollonico explain, it is in this month that the barrels are drained, making room for the new musts: Vin Santo is "the holiday wine, a symbol of sharing and memory."
This year, the event once again revolves around the "Best Homemade Vin Santo" competition, which attracts dozens of amateur producers from across the Valdichiana Senese region, accompanied by amateur Vin Santo tastings along the village streets, local product markets, and guided tours.
The detailed program for the 21st edition (times, conferences, dinners, and awards) will be announced by the Pro Loco of Montefollonico in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on past editions, the weekend usually includes:
