The Crete Senesi White Truffle Market Exhibition is one of the most anticipated autumn food and wine events in Tuscany. It takes place in San Giovanni d'Asso, a charming village within the municipality of Montalcino, in the province of Siena. The event celebrates Tuber magnatum pico, the white truffle that reaches world-renowned quality in the woods and truffle grounds of the Crete Senesi.

The village and its castle

The heart of the event is the Castle of San Giovanni d'Asso, home to the Truffle Museum, around which the medieval village streets bustle with activity. The landscape of the Crete Senesi, with its clay hills, gullies, and biancane, offers a stunning backdrop for the festival, framed by rows of vines, oaks, and woodlands perfect for truffle growth.

The Market Exhibition spans two weekends in November and offers a rich and varied program:

• Truffle market with stalls from local truffle hunters, where you can buy the precious tuber directly from the source
• Markets featuring local products and crafts
• Gourmet stands and a restaurant set up in the Castle, serving truffle-based dishes
• Guided tastings and food and wine masterclasses
• Truffle hunting demonstrations with trained dogs in the truffle grounds
• Cooking shows with local chefs
• The arrival of the Treno Natura, the historic steam train that travels from Siena to San Giovanni d'Asso along the scenic Crete railway

Truffle, wine, and tradition

The festival is also an opportunity to discover the region's great oenological excellence: during the Grand Dinners in the Castle, prestigious consortia such as Brunello di Montalcino and Orcia DOC are featured, paired with exquisite truffle dishes. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of San Giovanni d'Asso in collaboration with the Sienese Truffle Hunters Association, with the support of the Municipality of Montalcino.
