Five days of concerts, fireworks, and tradition in the heart of the Val d'Orcia
Every year in mid-August, Pienza celebrates Ferragosto with a program that weaves together music, gastronomy, and popular tradition. Located in the province of Siena, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia, the festivities transform the famous "ideal city" commissioned by Pope Pius II into an open-air stage, spanning Renaissance squares, narrow alleys, and viewpoints overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills.
The celebrations run from August 14th to 18th, with a packed calendar organized by Pro Loco Pienza and Polisportiva Pienza. The evenings revolve around two highly anticipated moments: the fireworks on the night of August 14th, launched along the Viale Santa Caterina slope with the Val d'Orcia as a natural backdrop, and the Assumption Concert on August 15th in Piazza Pio II.
The Ferragosto concert is the heart of the event: the Orchestra del Brenta from Padua performs in Piazza Pio II, accompanied by the Corale di Pienza "Benvenuto Franci", a group named after the illustrious baritone born in Pienza. The program is complemented by other musical events in the Cathedral and the courtyards of historic palaces, in a dialogue between sacred, operatic, and symphonic music that enhances the acoustics and beauty of the Renaissance spaces.
Throughout the festival, the Pro Loco and Polisportiva animate the squares with aperitifs, food stalls, and popular dinners, offering a chance to savor the cuisine of the Val d'Orcia. Pienza is world-famous for its Pecorino di Pienza, and the Ferragosto days serve as an excellent introduction to the flavors that will take center stage at the historic Cacio Festival later in the month.
Experiencing Ferragosto in Pienza means enjoying an authentic, intimate festival, far from the crowds of major summer resorts, in one of Italy's most fascinating villages. Between a concert under the stars and fireworks illuminating the valley, it is the best way to discover the soul of the truest Tuscany, that of the Val d'Orcia.
The 2026 Ferragosto Celebrations in Pienza are part of a particularly rich calendar of events, dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the historic center's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list. From August 14th to 18th, the Pro Loco and Polisportiva will animate the village squares with concerts, food stalls, aperitifs, and the traditional fireworks.
The mayor emphasized that Pienza is "not a museum, but a living city that still has much to tell": the summer festivities are proof of this, with a program that combines high culture and popular celebration.
The detailed schedule of individual events is published by the Pro Loco of Pienza in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto.
Pienza can be reached by car from the SR2 Cassia road, taking the exit towards San Quirico d'Orcia, then the SP146. The most convenient train station is Chiusi-Chianciano-Chianciano Terme (on the Rome-Florence line), from where you can continue by bus or car. Nearest airports: Florence and Rome.
Most events, including concerts, are free and take place in the squares and streets of the historic center.
During Ferragosto, the village is very busy: it is advisable to arrive early to park in the areas outside the walls and to book accommodation in the city or the surrounding Val d'Orcia well in advance.
