The Night of San Lorenzo featuring Vino Nobile and shooting stars in Piazza Grande
Calici di Stelle in Montepulciano is the annual event held on August 10th to celebrate the Night of San Lorenzo in the historic center of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. As the Perseid meteor shower streaks across the sky, the spectacular Piazza Grande and the winding streets of the Renaissance village come alive for an evening entirely dedicated to wine, fine food, and conviviality.
The region's two flagship wines are the true stars of the evening: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, one of Tuscany's most celebrated reds, and the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC. Tastings are curated by FISAR sommeliers and local producers from the Valdichiana Senese, who guide visitors through various labels, perfectly paired with local flavors and traditional recipes.
The experience offers several formats designed for every type of guest:
The evening kicks off in the late afternoon with a parade by the Gruppo Sbandieratori e Tamburini del Bravìo delle Botti, marching from the Colonna del Marzocco to Piazza Grande, highlighting the historical and popular identity of Montepulciano. The program continues with live music in the square and on the church steps, while children can enjoy magic shows and entertainment. The event also showcases local craftsmanship and typical products from the Valdichiana Senese.
Calici di Stelle began as a national initiative promoted by the Movimento Turismo del Vino and the National Association of Wine Cities, which involves wineries and wine villages across Italy every August 10th. In Montepulciano, the event is organized by the Strada del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano e dei Sapori della Valdichiana Senese in collaboration with the Municipality of Montepulciano and the Consorzio del Vino Nobile, set against one of Tuscany's most scenic architectural backdrops, surrounded by Renaissance palaces, the Cathedral, and the village's iconic skyline.
The new edition of Calici di Stelle in Montepulciano is scheduled for August 10, 2026, during the traditional Night of San Lorenzo. The event, organized by the Strada del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano e dei Sapori della Valdichiana Senese with the Municipality of Montepulciano, will feature tastings of Vino Nobile DOCG and Rosso di Montepulciano DOC in Piazza Grande and the Contrade del Bravìo delle Botti, along with live music and family entertainment.
The detailed program (times, locations for guided tastings, coupons, and reservations) will be announced by the organizers on the official website and social media channels in the weeks preceding the event.
