A month of lights, markets, and magic in the Etruscan village of the Valdichiana
Every winter, the historic center of Cortona, a stunning medieval village perched on the hills of the Valdichiana in the province of Arezzo, gets dressed up for Christmas in Cortona. For over a month, from December 5, 2026, to January 6, 2027, the cobblestone streets, squares, and historic palaces of the city come alive with lights, decorations, markets, and attractions designed for all ages. Shop windows are themed, and characteristic wooden huts populate the heart of the city, offering visitors a fairy-tale atmosphere filled with art, tradition, and Tuscan gastronomy.
One of the most beloved elements of the event is the light animations and projections that illuminate the facades of the historic center's monuments every evening. These evocative light displays transform squares and churches into true open-air works of art, creating an emotional journey through iconic landmarks such as Piazza della Repubblica and the Church of San Domenico. The Etruscan village thus becomes a natural stage where history, architecture, and contemporary creativity merge.
The beating heart of Christmas in Cortona are the markets that enliven the historic center on weekends. The stalls are distributed primarily between Piazza Signorelli, dedicated to handicrafts and typical seasonal products, and Piazza Garibaldi, the realm of local food and wine and activities for children. Each weekend features a different theme: from local specialties at the Campagna Amica market by Coldiretti, to the Chocolate and Sweets Festival, the Terzieri and Rioni markets, and the final Epiphany celebration.
Made world-famous by the film Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona retains the intact charm of an Etruscan and medieval village, dominated by the Girifalco Fortress. During the holidays, the city combines its historical heritage with the hospitality of Tuscan tradition: mulled wine, traditional sweets, Valdichiana food and wine products, and the intimate atmosphere of its squares make Christmas in Cortona an authentic and unforgettable experience in the heart of the province of Arezzo.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Christmas in Cortona are confirmed: from December 5, 2026, to January 6, 2027. The historic center of Cortona will return to being dressed for the holidays with its markets distributed between Piazza Signorelli and Piazza Garibaldi, light projections on monument facades, and family attractions like the Sky Tower and Santa's House.
The complete calendar of individual events, weekend market themes, and schedules will be announced on the official website www.cortonanatale.it in the weeks preceding the start of the event. It is recommended to check official channels for updates on the program, attraction tickets, and special initiatives.
