The autumn festival that wraps up the Mugello season with potato tortelli, polenta, and roasted chestnuts
When the Mugello hills turn into a tapestry of autumn colors, the village of Ronta, in the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo (Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany), fires up the stoves for one of its most anticipated events: the Tortello, Polenta and Chestnut Festival. Spread over two weekends in October, it is traditionally the last major festival on the local calendar, marking the end of the village fair season before winter arrives.
The menu is a compendium of Tuscan-Emilian Apennine mountain cuisine, built around three protagonists that give the festival its name:
The table is completed by tagliolini, various meats, and grilled specialties in true Tuscan style, paired with local wines.
The festival takes place at the Ronta sports field, along Viale Fratelli Rosselli, in spacious areas suitable for families and groups. The kitchen opens in the evening for dinner, while lunch is also served on Sundays. Everything is managed by local volunteers, creating an honest and familiar atmosphere that has made this event a meeting point for the entire Borgo San Lorenzo community and the many visitors coming up to Mugello from Florence for years.
Potato tortelli and chestnuts tell the story of the peasant soul of this part of Tuscany: the former, born as a humble dish capable of feeding people with few ingredients, is today a true gastronomic flag of Mugello; the latter, gathered in the Apennine chestnut groves, were a precious food source for mountain families for centuries. Bringing them together in a single end-of-season festival means celebrating the harvest season and the authentic flavors of the Province of Florence, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The Tortello, Polenta and Chestnut Festival in Ronta returns in 2026 over two weekends, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October and Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, at the sports field of the hamlet of Borgo San Lorenzo (FI). The stars are the Mugello potato tortelli, polenta (also fried), roasted chestnuts, and grilled meats, following the tradition that makes this event the last major festival on the local calendar. The dates have been confirmed by the 2026 event calendar of Borgo San Lorenzo.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed (October 10-11 and 17-18), while the detailed program with times and the final menu is traditionally published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival is held at the Ronta sports field, on Viale Fratelli Rosselli, in the hamlet of Borgo San Lorenzo (FI), in the heart of the Mugello region.
By car from Florence, reach Borgo San Lorenzo via the SS302 Brisighellese-Ravennate, then continue towards the village of Ronta. By train, the reference station is Borgo San Lorenzo, on the Faentina line (Florence-Faenza), from where you can continue by car or bus.
The kitchen opens in the evening for dinner; it is also open for lunch on Sundays. In case of bad weather, the event takes place in covered areas.
