Every Sunday in October, Marradi celebrates the PGI Marron Buono of Mugello
For over sixty years, every Sunday in October, the village of Marradi, nestled in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines in the upper Mugello area, in the Province of Florence (Tuscany), dresses up to celebrate its signature fruit: the chestnut. The Marradi Chestnut and Marron Buono Festival is one of the longest-running and most popular autumn food and wine events in the region, attracting thousands of visitors each Sunday.
The absolute star is the Marron Buono of Mugello, a chestnut variety protected by the PGI label, prized for its generous size, sweetness, and ease of peeling. Grown in the ancient chestnut groves that cover the slopes around Marradi, it is the raw material for a gastronomic tradition that the festival showcases through the Marron Buono Market Exhibition.
Throughout the historic center, you can taste the essential bruciate (roasted chestnuts), chestnut tortelli, castagnaccio, traditional peasant cakes and pastries, as well as the refined marrons glacés for which Marradi is famous throughout Italy.
A unique charm is provided by the historic train that travels along the scenic Faentina railway line, reaching Marradi through the Apennine woods: vintage "Centoporte" carriages from the 1930s and, on certain days, a steam locomotive turn the journey into a nostalgic and romantic experience, an integral part of the festival's tradition.
Organized by the Pro Loco Marradi, the festival is not just a celebration of taste but an opportunity to discover the town of Marradi and the entire Mugello area: between markets, street performances, music, excursions in the chestnut groves, and live cooking demonstrations by local chefs, the Marradi autumn becomes a journey into the culture and folk traditions of this corner of Tuscany.
The 63rd edition of the Marradi Chestnut and Marron Buono Festival is expected for the Sundays of October 2026, following the tradition that sees the festival animate the historic center every Sunday of the month (October 4, 11, 18, and 25). The presence of the four themed areas is confirmed — Court of Flavors, Artisan Woods, Artists' Alley, and Taste Funfair — with food stands, craft markets, music, and entertainment.
The detailed daily program, with times, guests, and special initiatives, will be published by the Pro Loco Marradi in the weeks leading up to the event. The arrival of the historic train along the Faentina line is also confirmed as a suggestive way to reach Marradi in the Mugello.
Detailed program awaiting official publication by the Pro Loco Marradi. Usual structure: Court of Flavors (chestnut-based specialties), Artisan Woods, Artists' Alley, and Taste Funfair, with roasted chestnuts, chestnut tortelli, castagnaccio, and marrons glacés.
By train: Marradi is served by the Faentina railway line (Florence–Faenza); the station is just a short walk from the historic center. During the festival, dedicated historic trains often run along this line.
By car: From Florence, it can be reached via the SS302 Brisighellese-Ravennate (Faentina Road) through the Passo della Colla di Casaglia; from Faenza along the same route. On festival Sundays, it is recommended to consider the train to avoid traffic.
The event takes place every Sunday in October in the historic center of Marradi. Admission is generally free; some activities and experiences may have separate costs.
