The great autumn fair in the Mugello region, featuring local flavors, traditional crafts, and the Bardiccio Challenge
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The October Fair in Dicomano, located in the heart of the Mugello near Florence, is one of the most beloved events of the Tuscan autumn. Its origins lie in Dicomano's historical role as a medieval crossroads and a bustling ancient market town: for centuries, at the beginning of October, the village has drawn farmers, artisans, and visitors to celebrate the fruits of the land and traditional flavors. Even today, the fair symbolically opens with the traditional goods market on the first Wednesday of the month in Piazza della Repubblica, before coming to life during the weekend with a richer program.
The historic center of Dicomano fills with stalls and aromas: chestnuts, almonds, walnuts, local products, wine, and craft beer enliven the food and wine stands, while the food & drink area offers specialties from the Mugello region. Alongside tastings, there are craft markets, ancient trades, and artistic craftsmanship that showcase the material culture of this corner of Tuscany between the Valdisieve and Chianti Rufina areas.
The most anticipated moment is the Disfida del Bardiccio, the "tastiest challenge of the autumn." The bardiccio is a typical sausage born in this area, a dish from the "cucina povera" tradition where nothing was wasted. In the challenge, held in Piazza Buonamici, chefs, butchers, and officials from the municipalities of the Mugello and Valdisieve compete for the coveted palio before a jury of experts and well-known figures. The 2025 edition marked the sixth in the series, a sign of a well-established and identity-defining event.
Beyond gastronomy, the October Fair offers live music, performances, art installations, and art exhibitions, as well as workshops for children that make the festival suitable for all ages. There is no shortage of folkloric moments, with a historical pageant, flag-wavers, and the Podere cart parading through the town center, recalling the rural and farming roots of the Dicomano community.
The fair takes place in the historic center of Dicomano — Piazza Buonamici, Piazza della Repubblica, and the surrounding streets — in the Municipality of Dicomano, Province of Florence, within the Tuscany Region. Admission is free. It is organized by the Municipality of Dicomano with the involvement of local associations.
The October Fair in Dicomano is an annual event traditionally held in the first days of October in the historic center of the Mugello village. For 2026, local event calendars indicate a new appointment, continuing the tradition of previous editions and the famous Disfida del Bardiccio.
The detailed program — including times, shows, markets, the historical pageant, and the day of the Challenge — is usually published by the Municipality of Dicomano in the weeks preceding the fair. We recommend checking the official website of the Municipality and the event's Facebook page for confirmation of dates and the full program.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers on official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Based on previous editions, the usual structure of the fair includes:
By car: Dicomano can be reached via the SS67 and SR551 roads along the Valdisieve, approximately 35 km from Florence. By train: the Dicomano station is served by the Faentina line (Florence–Borgo San Lorenzo–Faenza). During the fair, the historic center is largely pedestrianized, with parking available in nearby areas.
Free admission to all areas of the fair. Tastings and products at the food and wine stands are available for purchase according to the individual exhibitors' price lists.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the town center and arrive early on days with high attendance, particularly on the Sunday of the Disfida del Bardiccio. For the updated program, check the Municipality of Dicomano's website and the official Facebook page of the event.
