About Sagginale Tortello Festival

Every August, the village of Sagginale in Borgo San Lorenzo (Mugello, Florence province) hosts one of the region's most beloved food festivals: the Tortello and Porcini Mushroom Festival. Held at the Sagginale Sports Field by the A.S.D. Sagginale, the event celebrates the famous Mugello potato tortello, served according to tradition alongside Florentine steak, mixed grills, and porcini mushrooms from the Apennine woods. Enjoy convivial evenings, excellent Tuscan cuisine, and a village atmosphere at the foot of the Sieve river.

The Sagginale Tortello and Porcini Mushroom Festival

In the heart of the Mugello, the small village of Sagginale, in the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo (Florence province, Tuscany), hosts one of the valley's most heartfelt and popular food festivals every summer: the Tortello and Porcini Mushroom Festival. The event takes place at the Sagginale Sports Field on Via Ponte d'Annibale and is organized by the local sports association, A.S.D. Sagginale.

A tradition born in the seventies

The festival has deep roots: it began in the early seventies, alongside the local football team, to help fund its activities. Since then, it has become a staple of the Mugello summer, drawing families, groups of friends, and visitors from neighboring towns every evening. It is a perfect example of the long-standing Tuscan festival tradition, where local cuisine becomes an occasion for celebration and community life.

The Mugello tortello takes center stage

The star of the show is the Mugello tortello, a fresh pasta filled with potatoes, traditionally served with meat ragù but also available in other variations. It is one of the gastronomic symbols of the Mugello, and in Sagginale, it is prepared according to the time-honored recipe. Alongside the tortello, the food stalls offer Florentine steak, mixed meat grills, and, depending on the season, porcini mushrooms foraged in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine woods.

Atmosphere and setting

The stalls are set up in the covered areas of the sports field, ensuring the festival continues even in case of rain. Service is primarily available for dinner, with some days—particularly around Ferragosto (mid-August)—also offering lunch. The village of Sagginale, overlooking the Sieve river, offers the cool air and tranquility of the Mugello countryside, just a few kilometers from the center of Borgo San Lorenzo, the valley's main town. Evenings are often accompanied by live music and entertainment, making the festival a fun occasion for all ages.

Why it's worth visiting

The Sagginale Tortello Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover authentic Mugello cuisine away from the tourist circuits, in a genuine and family-friendly setting. While it is one of many tortello festivals that animate the Mugello during the summer, it retains a sincere, popular character that makes it particularly appreciated by locals and visitors seeking tradition.
