Ladin crafts and traditions among the haylofts of Canazei
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Te anter i Tobié was born in 1997 in Canazei, the main town of the Val di Fassa, in the province of Trento and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The name is in the Ladin language and means "among the haylofts": the tobié are, in fact, the ancient wooden barns that, leaning against the village houses, once stored hay and the tools of mountain farming life. For this occasion, these spaces, usually closed, are reopened and transformed into small stages where the crafts, sounds, and flavors of the Fassa tradition come back to life.
The event is much more than a festival: it is a true journey to discover the customs and traditions of the Ladin community of the Dolomites. Walking through the tobié of the historic center, visitors meet artisans at work and witness demonstrations of ancient crafts, from woodworking to the preparation of medicinal herbs, and from cheese making to traditional chores. Accompanying the festivities is Forgian, the charming mascot created by artist Claus Soraperra in the late nineties, which has become a small symbol of the event over the years.
The program takes shape over an entire weekend. The opening is marked by a grand parade through the streets of the town, featuring folk groups, associations, and the local brass band, followed by the symbolic handing over of the town keys. In the following days, the historic center comes alive with roving concerts, performances by folk groups, dancing, and entertainment, while Sunday opens with Mass. It is a festive yet intimate atmosphere that unites residents and guests around the roots of the valley.
A central role is played by Ladin gastronomy. Along the route, you will find tasting points featuring typical Fassa dishes and Dolomite cheeses, such as Nostrano di Fassa and Puzzone di Moena, which are often the stars of tasting and pairing sessions. Good food, accompanied by local wines, becomes another way to tell the story of the deep bond between the community and its mountains.
The setting is the spectacular backdrop of Canazei, a village surrounded by the great Dolomite groups of the Marmolada, Sella, and Sassolungo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Experiencing Te anter i Tobié means combining the discovery of an authentic tradition with a holiday among some of the most famous peaks of the Alps, in a municipality that is a premier destination in Trentino both in summer and winter.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Te anter i Tobié have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to take place on the weekend of mid-July in the historic center of Canazei, with the opening of the tobié, the inaugural parade, demonstrations of ancient Ladin crafts, concerts by folk groups, and tasting points for Fassa gastronomy. The official program will be published by the organizers shortly before the event.
Canazei can be reached by car via the SS48 Dolomite road; the nearest motorway exit is Egna/Ora (A22 Brenner Motorway), from which you continue along the Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa. By train, the reference stations are Trento or Ora, connected to Canazei by Trentino Trasporti bus lines.
The event takes place in the historic center and admission is free; gastronomic tastings and some activities require payment on-site.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking through the village streets, as well as a light jacket for high-altitude evenings. During the summer, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance.
