About Farmers' and Artisans' Market S. Cristina

Every Tuesday evening throughout the summer, the pedestrian area of S. Cristina in Val Gardena comes alive with a traditional farmers' and artisans' market. In the heart of the Dolomites, local artisans from Val Gardena and South Tyrol showcase wood carvings, regional products, and gastronomic specialties, while live music, dance, and craft demonstrations fill the evenings. A free, convivial event that celebrates the valley's Ladin identity and the traditions of the Bolzano province.

A market in the heart of Val Gardena

In the pedestrian zone of Santa Cristina Valgardena (known as S. Cristina Gherdëina in Ladin), located in the municipality of the same name in the province of Bolzano, the Traditional Farmers' and Artisans' Market in Val Gardena comes to life every Tuesday evening in summer. It is one of the most iconic events of the Val Gardena summer: in the heart of the Dolomites, nestled between the peaks of the Sassolungo and the Sella Group, the village's main street transforms into a vibrant trail of stalls where visitors can soak up the authentic Ladin and South Tyrolean culture.

Ladin crafts and farm-fresh products

The exhibitors are primarily Val Gardena artisans, heirs to a world-renowned wood-carving tradition, joined by mountain farmers offering the bounty of their alpine farms. Visitors can admire and purchase:

  • hand-carved wooden sculptures and objects;
  • traditional South Tyrolean farm products and local culinary specialties;
  • authentic handicrafts from the South Tyrol region.

One of the most captivating aspects is the chance to watch artisans at work, with live demonstrations showcasing techniques passed down through generations.

Music, dance, and demonstrations

Each evening is accompanied by a rich program of music, dance, and craft demonstrations, creating a festive and authentic atmosphere. Throughout the weeks, the schedule features Schuhplattler dance groups, alphorn players, vocal quartets, and brass bands, alongside demonstrations of ancient crafts such as lace-making, traditional costume creation, and various artistic modeling techniques. Folk music provides the perfect backdrop for an evening stroll amidst the village lights and the surrounding mountains.

An experience for the whole family

The market is free of charge and takes place in a pedestrian-friendly setting suitable for everyone, from families with children to guests staying in the valley's many accommodations. It is the ideal opportunity to experience the folk traditions of Val Gardena up close, taste mountain delicacies, and take home an authentic piece of Trentino-Alto Adige craftsmanship.
