The patronal feast of Val Gardena featuring a solemn Mass, traditional costumes, and folk music
The St. Christina Village Festival, known in German as Kirchweihfest St. Christina, is the traditional patronal feast of Santa Cristina Valgardena/St. Christina in Gröden, a small Ladin town in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Set in the stunning Val Gardena at the foot of the Sassolungo massif, this festival is one of the most cherished summer events for the local community, blending religious devotion with festive, popular conviviality.
The most solemn moment of the festival takes place on Sunday morning, when at 8:45 AM, a solemn Mass is celebrated in the parish church of St. Christina, accompanied by the village choir and orchestra. Following the service, the characteristic procession in traditional Val Gardena costumes takes place: the costume association and the local brass band (Musikkapelle St. Christina) parade from the churchyard to the festival grounds, offering a fascinating spectacle that serves as a living testament to the Ladin identity and the valley's cultural roots.
The hub of the festivities is the Center Iman, where throughout the day, various South Tyrolean brass bands perform on stage, offering a mix of folk music, traditional tunes, and infectious cheer. The social aspect is equally important, with food stalls serving traditional dishes, South Tyrolean specialties, desserts, and drinks, creating a festive atmosphere that welcomes both residents and holidaymakers in this renowned Dolomite resort.
The St. Christina Village Festival is much more than a simple summer party: it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Ladin culture of Val Gardena, rediscover traditions passed down through generations, and experience the genuine hospitality of a mountain community. A free event open to everyone, perfect for families and those wishing to discover the most authentic side of South Tyrol.
The St. Christina Village Festival returns on July 18 and 19, 2026, with its traditional format. On Saturday, July 18, the festivities begin at 6:00 PM and continue until 1:00 AM, featuring live music and food stalls. Sunday, July 19, is the highlight: at 8:45 AM, a solemn Mass is celebrated in the parish church, accompanied by the village choir and orchestra; this is followed by the picturesque procession in traditional Val Gardena costumes with the brass band leading participants to the Center Iman. From there, the celebration continues from 9:30 AM to 10:00 PM with concerts by South Tyrolean brass bands, culinary specialties, and fun for all ages.
