Traditional Ladin dances in Piazza Marconi, Canazei
Every summer, in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, in the center of Canazei, the Grop de Folklor de Cianacei brings the evenings of the Val di Fassa to life with the dances and music of the Ladin tradition. At 9:00 PM, under the Dolomite sky, the folk group offers a free show that combines historical costumes, group and couple choreography, and the unmistakable accompaniment of the accordion.
Founded in 1974, the Grop de Folklor de Cianacei is a historic folk group that has been safeguarding and passing on the Ladin cultural heritage for over half a century. Based in Canazei, the group aims to showcase the costumes, dances, and music of the Val di Fassa of yesteryear with joy and pride, acting as an ambassador for Dolomite culture both in Italy and abroad.
Each performance opens with the evocative waving of the seven-colored flag, a symbol of the seven municipalities of the Val di Fassa and the strong sense of belonging that binds the Ladin community to its roots. This is followed by group and couple dances that tell stories of celebrations, folk customs, and daily life, passed down from generation to generation. In the past, these dances were learned during the winter in rooms warmed by the fire, when farm work left time for socializing.
The choreography of the Grop de Folklor de Cianacei is inspired by the Ladin and South Tyrolean tradition, a cultural blend typical of this Dolomite territory straddling the provinces of Trento, Bolzano, and Belluno. The Val di Fassa, in the province of Trento and the Trentino-Alto Adige region, still preserves the Ladin language and customs today, of which folklore is one of the most vibrant and deeply felt expressions.
The event is particularly suitable for families and those who wish to get to know the cultural identity of the Val di Fassa in an authentic and festive atmosphere, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.
The 2026 edition of the Grop de Folklor de Cianacei performances features two events in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi in Canazei: Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 25, 2026, both starting at 9:00 PM.
Each evening opens with the evocative waving of the seven-colored flag, symbol of the seven municipalities of the Val di Fassa, and continues with group and couple dances that recount festivals, folk customs, and daily life of the Ladin tradition, accompanied by the accordion and vibrant historical costumes.
Admission is free. In case of bad weather, the performance takes place at the Cinema Teatro Marmolada in Canazei. The event is organized with the Antermoia Cultural Association as part of the summer events in the Val di Fassa.
Canazei can be reached by car from the A22 Brenner motorway (Egna/Ora or Bolzano Nord exit) by driving up the Val di Fassa, or from the Val di Fiemme. In summer, Trentino Trasporti bus connections are available to the train stations of Trento and Ora.
The performance is held in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, in the center of Canazei, in front of the tourist office. In case of bad weather, the show moves to the Cinema Teatro Marmolada.
