The mountain huts of the Hirzer area open their doors every first Sunday of the month, from May to October
The Tallner Sunntig is one of the most beloved traditions of the Hirzer hiking area, the mountain that rises above the hamlet of Tall (Talle) in the municipality of Scena/Schenna, in the Province of Bolzano, the heart of the Merano region in Trentino-Alto Adige. The name, in the South Tyrolean dialect, simply means "Tall Sunday": every first Sunday of the month, from May to October, the mountain huts and refuges scattered along the Hirzer trails open their doors for a day dedicated to local flavors, music, and mountain conviviality.
The true star of the festival is the mountain cuisine. The hut hosts prepare rich and hearty menus that tell the gastronomic story of South Tyrol:
All of this is accompanied by live music and, in some huts, fun theatrical interludes and games that make the day perfect for both adults and children.
The terraces of the huts offer sweeping views over Merano and the Passiria Valley, a natural balcony ideal for a scenic break. Tallner Sunntig is also designed for families: playful activities, a relaxed atmosphere, and a rich entertainment program bring the various huts of the area to life. There is also the unmissable raffle, with prizes linked to the local area.
On Tallner Sunntig days, the area's ski lifts apply discounted fares: the Hirzer Cable Car, the Verdins-Tall Cable Car, and the Grube Chairlift allow you to easily reach the trails and huts without sacrificing the pleasure of a walk in the greenery. The event is organized by the Scena/Schenna Tourist Board and typically takes place from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
More than just a single event, the Tallner Sunntig is a seasonal ritual that marks the summer in the Merano region: six Sundays, from May to October, where the Hirzer mountain becomes the stage for an authentic celebration, where Tyrolean culture, the hospitality of the huts, and the beauty of the landscape blend into an unforgettable experience.
Six appointments mark the 2026 season on the Hirzer: May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6, and October 4. On each of these Sundays, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the mountain huts in the area offer typical menus — canederli, Schlutzkrapfen, platters, and homemade desserts — accompanied by live music and entertainment for families.
On event days, the Hirzer Cable Car, the Verdins-Tall Cable Car, and the Grube Chairlift apply discounted fares, making it easy to reach the trails and huts overlooking Merano and the Passiria Valley.
Scena/Schenna is located just a few kilometers from Merano and can be reached by car or public transport. From Scena, the Hirzer Cable Car, Verdins-Tall Cable Car, and Grube Chairlift ascend toward the hiking area.
On event days, the cable cars apply discounted fares. Food and drinks at the huts are à la carte.
The events typically take place from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
