Autumn in the Passeier Valley: Törggelen, traditions, flavors, and hiking
Psairer Herbst (Passeier Autumn) is the rich calendar of autumn events that brings the Passeier Valley to life, the valley north of Merano climbing toward the Timmelsjoch Pass. Based at the Tourismusverein in St. Leonhard in Passeier, in the Province of Bolzano, the festival spans all the villages of the valley: St. Leonhard, St. Martin, Riffian, Kuens, and Moos in Passeier. The motto for these weeks is simple and direct: taste, discover, experience.
Autumn in the Passeier Valley is above all the time for Törggelen, the ancient South Tyrolean custom that brings the fruits of the season to the table. In rustic taverns and farm cellars, you can savor dumplings, sauerkraut, and pork sausages, finishing with chestnuts, krapfen, and Suser, the new wine still in fermentation. Participating venues include the Haselstaude Tavern and the Bucherkeller Refreshment Point in St. Leonhard, the Martinerhof's Brauhaus in St. Martin, the Luferkeller in Riffian, and the Mooserwirt Tavern in Moos.
Beyond the Törggelen evenings, the program alternates between guided hikes through copper-colored forests, walks along the Waalwege (ancient irrigation channel paths), e-bike tours with gourmet stops, cooking classes, tastings of alpine cheese and speck, wool-working workshops, and guided tours of historical buildings and museums, such as the MuseumPasseier at the Sandhof. There is no shortage of farmers' markets and village festivals that fill the town squares.
The Passeier Valley is a land of strong rural traditions, the homeland of the Tyrolean hero Andreas Hofer, and in autumn it reveals its most authentic face: copper-colored forests under an intense blue sky, alpine pastures still open, and the genuineness of South Tyrolean home cooking. Psairer Herbst is the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of South Tyrol away from the most crowded routes, amidst seasonal flavors and mountain landscapes.
The Psairer Herbst 2026 runs from October 10th to November 8th in the villages of the Passeier Valley. The calendar alternates between Törggelen evenings, hikes through copper-colored forests, gourmet tastings, and events dedicated to rural traditions, based at the Tourismusverein in St. Leonhard in Passeier (Province of Bolzano).
Throughout the weeks, workshops such as From Sheep to Wool at the MuseumPasseier, guided tours of the Schneeberg mine, hikes through the vineyards of Riffian, and Törggelen evenings in the valley's taverns and cellars are also scheduled. The full program, including times, prices, and booking details, is published on the official website www.passeiertal.it.
