The Saturday morning farmers' market in the Church Square of Sarentino
The Bauernmarkt, or Sarentino farmers' market (Sarnthein in German), is one of the most cherished events for the community of the Sarntal Valley, the mountain valley north of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. Every Saturday morning, starting at 8:00 AM, the Church Square (Kirchplatz) in the main village transforms into a lively meeting point where local farmers set up their stalls.
The charm of the Bauernmarkt lies in its authenticity: you won't find industrial goods here, but rather the fruits of labor from local mountain farms. At the stalls, you can purchase salads, seasonal vegetables, fresh eggs, homemade cakes, krapfen, and fruit juices, along with specialties that change with the rhythm of the seasons. It is the perfect opportunity to shop for farm-to-table products, chat with the producers, and bring home a piece of South Tyrolean genuineness.
The market is held every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, typically from May to November. During the summer months, the offering expands: in July and August, the market also returns every Tuesday morning to welcome residents and holidaymakers in the valley.
In addition to the weekly event, the Church Square hosts a series of traditional markets throughout the year linked to the farming calendar and local festivities, including the spring market, the Veitsmarkt in mid-June, the Kirchtagsmarkt in early September (held during the famous Sarner Kirchtag, considered one of the largest folk festivals in South Tyrol), the Kälbermarkt (calf market) in October, and the Martinsmarkt in November. These are moments that combine commerce, tradition, and social life, deeply valued by the German-speaking population of the valley.
Visiting the Sarentino Bauernmarkt means immersing yourself in the life of one of the most traditional valleys in the Municipality of Sarentino, in the province of Bolzano and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The Sarntal Valley is known for its strong bond with traditions, craftsmanship, and local costumes, and the farmers' market is one of its most vibrant and daily expressions. A simple yet precious experience for those who want to discover the authentic face of the South Tyrolean mountains.
In 2026, the Sarentino farmers' market confirms its Saturday morning (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM) appointment in the Church Square, with the usual selection of salads, vegetables, eggs, cakes, krapfen, and juices from the valley's farms. From July to August, the Tuesday morning opening is added. The calendar is enriched by traditional seasonal markets: highlights include the Veitsmarkt in June, the Kirchtagsmarkt in early September for the Sarner Kirchtag, the Kälbermarkt in October, and the Martinsmarkt in November.
