The pastoral traditions of the Alpe Cimbra come to life in the streets of San Sebastiano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Shepherds' Festival is held every summer in the small hamlet of San Sebastiano, part of the municipality of Folgaria on the Alpe Cimbra plateau in the province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,279 meters, the village transforms for a day into a living museum dedicated to mountain shepherding—a profession defined by hard work, dedication, and deep respect for nature.
Strolling through the village streets, visitors can get an up-close look at ancient pastoral practices. The event commemorates customs linked to transhumance, when herds were driven from high-altitude pastures down to the valley, and offers a rich calendar of demonstrations and activities:
The star of the show is mountain gastronomy: the kitchen opens at midday with polenta cooked by hand over an open fire accompanied by local cheeses, while in the afternoon, there is the traditional snack featuring the sweet Vuechez. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors of the Alpe Cimbra in a convivial atmosphere, suitable for families and children.
The festival is organized by the San Sebastiano Youth Group in collaboration with the Alpe Cimbra Folgaria Lavarone Luserna Vigolana Tourism Board. Several workshops have limited capacity and require registration. This summer appointment unites community, memory, and a love for the mountains, making it perfect for those visiting Folgaria and the Trentino plateau.
The Shepherds' Festival in San Sebastiano is expected to return in the summer of 2026, during the usual early August period in which it traditionally takes place. At the moment, however, the date for the 2026 edition has not yet been officially announced by the San Sebastiano Youth Group and the Alpe Cimbra Tourism Board.
As every year, we look forward to demonstrations of ancient pastoral crafts, live cheesemaking, goat trekking, workshops for children, and traditional mountain dishes. To find out the date and the final program, we recommend checking the official Alpe Cimbra website.
San Sebastiano is a hamlet of Folgaria (TN) on the Alpe Cimbra. By car, it can be reached via the A22 Brenner motorway, taking the Rovereto Nord exit and following signs for Folgaria and San Sebastiano. The nearest train station is in Rovereto, which is connected to the plateau by bus lines.
Admission to the festival is free. Some workshops and the goat trekking have limited spots: registration via the Alpe Cimbra Tourism Board website (www.alpecimbra.it) is recommended.
Bring comfortable shoes for walking through the village streets and a warm layer: at 1,279 meters, temperatures can be cool even in summer.
