The rustic cuisine of the local farmers' wives in Piazza Raiffeisen, Scena
The Schenner Bauernkuchl is one of the most beloved gastronomic highlights of autumn in Scena/Schenna, a charming holiday village nestled on the sun-drenched slopes above Merano, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). For one day, the central Piazza Raiffeisen (Raiffeisenplatz) turns into a grand open-air hofküche: the Bäuerinnen, or local farmers' wives, take to the stoves to serve visitors genuine mountain specialties.
The menu celebrates the local farming heritage: Tyrolean dumplings (Knödel) with sauerkraut salad, pork ribs with sauerkraut, platters of local cold cuts and cheeses (Marendbrettl), and fragrant, homemade sweet Krapfen. Naturally, the season's staples—chestnuts and new wine—take center stage. Every dish is prepared according to family recipes using local ingredients, offering the perfect opportunity to taste authentic Scena cuisine, direct from the hands of those who cook it.
The event is part of the traditional autumn Törggelen, an ancient South Tyrolean custom linked to the grape harvest and new wine, when people gather in farmhouses, Buschenschänke (wine taverns), and mountain huts to enjoy the robust flavors of the season. The Bauernkuchl brings this spirit directly to the town square, making it accessible to everyone in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere. It is a key event in the Herbstgenuss in Schenna (Autumn of Taste in Scena) calendar, which enlivens the village with celebrations, tastings, and seasonal festivities.
The day is accompanied by live music from the duo Vincent & Fernando, filling the square with traditional melodies and festive notes. Between a glass of new wine and a steaming plate of dumplings, the Bauernkuchl is, above all, a moment for locals and visitors to connect, rediscovering the warmth of rural hospitality in one of the most scenic spots in the Burgraviato, with views over the Merano basin and the Dolomites.
