Faith, tradition, and popular devotion in Mugnano del Cardinale
The San Liberatore Procession is one of the most deeply felt religious events for the community of Mugnano del Cardinale, a town in the province of Avellino, Campania, located at the western edge of the Irpinia region. Every year in mid-May, the town pauses to accompany the statue of the Saint along the streets of the town center: this is not a tourist-oriented event, but a rite of devotion renewed from generation to generation, involving entire families, children, young people, and the elderly.
The cult of San Liberatore in Mugnano del Cardinale is linked to the Church of Saints Maria del Carmine and Liberatore, a 17th-century building overlooking Via Nazionale in the heart of the town. Its late-Baroque facade, featuring a stone portal topped by a votive shrine, and the clock tower are among the most recognizable landmarks. Inside, beyond the 18th-century polychrome marble high altar dedicated to the Virgin of Mount Carmel, the church preserves valuable paintings and statues, including those of Saint Anthony of Padua and San Liberatore. During the festival, the statue of the Saint leaves its niche to be carried on shoulders among the faithful.
The procession route passes through the town's symbolic landmarks. The statue leaves the Church of Maria Santissima del Carmelo and proceeds along Via Garibaldi until it reaches Piazza Umberto I, in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, a pilgrimage destination known well beyond the borders of Campania. Here, the community gathers for the recitation of the Holy Rosary and the celebration of the Eucharist. The procession then continues along Viale De Lucia, crosses the main road, and finally returns to the starting church, where the statue is placed back in its niche.
Those who witness the procession experience an atmosphere that is both intimate and communal: prayers recited aloud, Marian and devotional hymns, the bearers carrying the statue, local associations and municipal representatives in the procession, and the local police accompanying the passage through the streets. It is a liturgy that steps outside the church walls to become a collective experience, capable of pausing the ordinary life of the town for a few hours.
The May procession effectively opens the season of popular celebrations in Mugnano del Cardinale, which continues in July with solemn festivities in honor of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, the town's patron saint, and the Feast of Maria Santissima del Carmelo, featuring concerts, performances, brass bands, and fireworks. Compared to these summer events, the day of San Liberatore retains a more intimate and strictly religious character, which is perhaps why it remains one of the most beloved by the locals.
Visitors to Mugnano del Cardinale can dedicate time to visiting the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, which houses the Saint's relics and has been a pilgrimage destination for two centuries, and exploring the historic center with its churches and votive shrines. The surrounding territory, nestled between the Partenio mountains and the Clanio valley, offers nature trails and a rustic gastronomy featuring fresh pasta, seasonal vegetables, cheeses, and hazelnuts, a typical product of this part of the province of Avellino.
The 2026 edition of the San Liberatore Procession took place on Sunday, May 17 in Mugnano del Cardinale, in the province of Avellino. The statue of the Saint, carried on shoulders, left the Church of Maria Santissima del Carmelo and was welcomed by a crowd of faithful who accompanied the procession along Via Garibaldi up to Piazza Umberto I, near the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena.
The route then continued along Viale De Lucia, crossed the main road, and returned to the Carmelo church, where the statue was placed back in its niche amidst fireworks. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Father Giuseppe Autorino, rector of the Sanctuary, who also took part in the procession together with the faithful. Families, young people, and the elderly participated in the day, in one of the most deeply felt commemorations for the local community.
Precise times were not released by the organizers: the procession took place during the afternoon and evening.
