The sausage and broccoli rabe festival in the village of Gallo, on the eve of Saint Nicholas

The "Sasicc' e Friariell'" Festival is the most anticipated winter event in Gallo di Comiziano, the only village within the small municipality of Comiziano, in the province of Naples, nestled in the heart of the Agro Nolano region of Campania. Every year, on the evening of December 5th, on the eve of the feast of Saint Nicholas—the village's patron saint—the small square near the middle school transforms into an open-air living room for the entire community, gathering to honor their saint amidst flavors, music, and human warmth.
The absolute star is the grilled sausage accompanied by friarielli (the typical Neapolitan broccoli rabe), served in a classic sandwich: a humble yet generous dish, an authentic emblem of Campanian popular cuisine. The tastings are paired with free-flowing wine, in a convivial atmosphere where everyone is welcome. The festival is not just a gastronomic event, but a moment of collective identity, capable of bridging generations and strengthening the bond with the territory.
The symbolic heart of the evening is the fucarone, the large bonfire lit in the square that burns throughout the night, a symbol of unity and warmth in the December cold. Around the fire, traditional folk songs and dances come to life, performed by local folk groups that evoke the rural music of Campania, including tammurriate and paranza rhythms. It is the most evocative part of the celebration, turning a simple tasting into a true village festival.
The festival is part of the celebrations for Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Gallo. The evening of December 5th serves as the eve of the religious rites: the blessing of the bonfire, fireworks, and, the following day, the solemn procession of the Saint through the streets of the village. Popular faith and conviviality thus intertwine in a consolidated tradition that, year after year, draws residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Agro Nolano.
With the scent of sausage on the grill and the glow of the bonfire, the "Sasicc' e Friariell'" Festival remains one of the most genuine appointments of the Campanian Christmas: an invitation to discover the tradition, history, and warmth of a community that comes together every December.
The "Sasicc' e Friariell'" Festival will return, according to tradition, on the evening of December 5, 2026, on the eve of the feast of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of the village of Gallo di Comiziano. As every year, the evening is expected to feature the classic sausage and broccoli rabe sandwich, free-flowing wine, the bonfire lit in the square, and traditional folk songs and dances. The official program is not yet available and will be communicated by the Saint Nicholas Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event.
Gallo is the only village in Comiziano (NA), in the Agro Nolano area, a short distance from Nola and Cimitile. By car, it can be reached from the Nola exit of the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, or via the SS7bis. By train, the reference station is Nola on the Circumvesuviana line, with a connection by bus or taxi to Comiziano.
The festival takes place on the evening of December 5th, starting at 8:00 PM, in the small square adjacent to the middle school. Free admission; tastings and wine are provided by the organizing committee.
As this is an outdoor winter event, warm clothing is recommended. The village is small: it is advisable to park in the surrounding streets and reach the square on foot.
