The patronal feast of Tufino: five nights of music and tradition in Piazza Gragnano
The Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Tufino, a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants located 91 meters above sea level in the Nola area, within the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania. Here, Saint Bartholomew is not just the figure celebrated by the Church on August 24th: he is the patron saint to whom the parish church of Saints Bartholomew the Apostle and John the Baptist is dedicated, and around whom the town's identity has revolved for generations.
As is the case throughout Campania, the patronal feast is both a religious rite and a grand public celebration. During the main days of the festivities, life in the town moves outdoors: illuminations decorate the streets, candy stalls and market stands enliven the center, families gather until late at night, and those who have emigrated return so as not to miss the event. It is a tradition that must be experienced rather than described, which explains why in this part of the province of Naples, the month of August is marked by patronal feasts from town to town.
Piazza Gragnano is the nerve center of the festivities. Every evening, a stage is set up to host free, open-air shows: it is here that, over the years, names beloved by the Campanian public have performed, from comedians of Neapolitan television to stars of the neomelodic scene. The formula is well-established and simple: live music for all ages, free admission, and a square that fills up well before the show begins.
For 2026, the Saint Bartholomew Festival Committee, in collaboration with Azzurra Spettacolo, has announced five consecutive evenings, from August 22nd to 26th, with a lineup that alternates between different genres and audiences:
The lineup clearly illustrates what a Campanian patronal feast is today. Alongside tributes to Italian rock and live bands, there is space for brass band music, an intangible heritage of Southern Italy: on the day of the liturgical feast, the band's concert accompanies the solemn moments with a repertoire ranging from symphonic marches to operatic transcriptions. The final evening is instead entrusted to contemporary Neapolitan song, capable of drawing thousands of people to the square, not only from the Nola area but also from neighboring provinces.
The religious aspect remains the core of the event: the celebrations in honor of the saint culminate on August 24th, when the statue of the Patron Saint is carried in procession along the main streets of the town, followed by the faithful and accompanied by the band. It is the moment when the devotional and festive dimensions merge, and when one grasps the most authentic meaning of the feast: an entire town that recognizes itself in its own tradition.
Those visiting Campania at the end of August will find an authentic festival in Tufino, far from the tourist circuits and just a few kilometers from Nola, Mount Vesuvius, and the main road junctions of the province. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy an evening of free open-air music, sample sweets and specialties from the stalls set up for the occasion, and observe a still-vibrant popular tradition up close.
From August 22 to 26, 2026, Piazza Gragnano becomes the center of the patronal feast of Tufino, in the Metropolitan City of Naples. The Saint Bartholomew Festival Committee has built a lineup that brings together great tributes, live entertainment, and tradition, with free evening events in the open air.
It begins on August 22 with Enzo Serio and the Vasco Over Band, continuing on the 23rd with Gerardo Amarante and his Spaccapaese, featuring folk music and storytelling. August 24, the liturgical day of Saint Bartholomew, is dedicated to the brass band tradition with the City of Lanciano Award. On August 25, it is the turn of the Battito Italiano Live Show Band with the voice of Rina, while on August 26, the square transforms into the heart of neomelodic music with Rosario Miraggio, highly anticipated by an audience arriving even from neighboring provinces.
Alongside the shows, devotional moments remain central, with celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint and the procession along the main streets of the town on the day of the feast.
The start times for individual shows are communicated by the Festival Committee in the days leading up to the event.
The shows are held in Piazza Gragnano, in the center of Tufino (ZIP code 80030), in the Metropolitan City of Naples. Religious celebrations take place in the parish church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle.
