The Saint Stephen's tree raised in the square on Christmas Day in Baiano
In Baiano, a town in the Mandamento baianese in the province of Avellino, Christmas is measured not only in nativity scenes and lights, but in meters of tree. The Maio Festival, dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, the town's patron saint, is one of the most recognizable folk rituals in inland Campania. The "maio" is a very tall trunk—usually a straight, slender beech—that the community fells, transports, and raises in the square on Christmas Day itself, in front of the parish church of Saint Stephen.
Local sources trace the rite back to very ancient, pre-Christian origins linked to tree worship and the sacredness of nature: the very name "maio" refers to the spring cycle of rebirth, later absorbed and reinterpreted by Catholic devotion to the protomartyr. The result is a festival where the sacred and the profane coexist seamlessly, and where the entire town—including emigrant families who return for the occasion—finds its identity.
The festival does not begin on December 25th. The countdown opens on December 13th, Saint Lucy's Day, with the start of the famous mess'e notte: masses celebrated at the first light of dawn, around five in the morning, a custom born to allow farmers to attend before heading to the fields. Upon leaving the church, groups of the faithful walk through the town streets singing and playing music, a ritual repeated daily until Christmas Eve.
On the evening of December 24th, the nativity scene is set up in the old quarters, and after dinner, the Baby Jesus is carried in a procession; in the Church of Santa Croce, the cutting tools and muzzle-loading rifles that will accompany the following day's pageant are blessed.
The tree is identified and marked weeks in advance in the Arciano woods, above the town, with a red "S" dedicating it to Saint Stephen. The mannesi, expert lumberjacks, fell and debark it; the trunk then descends to the valley and travels through the town streets on a horse-drawn cart. The procession is a spectacle in itself: folk costumes, drums, the banner of the ancient Baiano muzzle-loading group with blank shots, the band, and the traditional song Oi Stefanì, which accompanies the blessing of the maio.
The most delicate moment arrives in front of the church: the trunk is lowered into the prepared hole and raised by sheer strength using a system of ropes pulled simultaneously. The square remains silent until the maio is upright, then bells, applause, and the cry "Evviva 'o Maio e Santu Stefano" erupt. In the evening, at the base of the tree, the focarone is lit, the great propitiatory bonfire around which people sing and dance until nightfall.
On Saint Stephen's Day, December 26th, the festival changes tone: the statue of the patron saint leaves the church and travels in a procession through the streets of the historic center, closing a cycle that weaves together faith, music, peasant memory, and collective identity. The maio remains standing in the square and is subsequently sold, with the proceeds going to the parish.
Baiano also celebrates Saint Stephen in the first days of August, with a second patronal event consisting of a preparatory triduum, the cult of the 'battenti', a solemn procession, artistic illuminations, large band concerts, musical performances in Piazza Santo Stefano, and a final fireworks display. In 2025, the summer festivities took place from July 30th to August 4th.
Behind the organizational machine are the Associazione Festa Santo Stefano Aps, the Maio Committee, the parish, and the Municipality of Baiano, which handles permits, routes, and safety measures for the transport and raising of the trunk every year. In June 2026, Baiano also signed a twinning agreement with Putignano, a town in Puglia also devoted to Saint Stephen, confirming how this devotion has become a cultural bridge between territories.
The dates of the Maio Festival remain unchanged: the rite is tied to the liturgical calendar and is celebrated on December 25th, Christmas Day, with the concluding day on December 26th dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, patron saint of Baiano. As every year, the preparation period opens on December 13th, Saint Lucy's Day, with the traditional mess'e notte at dawn.
Regarding organization, the Associazione Festa Santo Stefano Aps renewed its board in 2026, chaired by Father Fiorelmo Cennamo, to guide the path toward the year's patronal festivities. The complete civil and religious calendar, with precise times for the felling, blessing, raising, and the bonfire, is usually released only in the weeks immediately preceding, through the Municipality of Baiano, the parish, and the association's social channels.
To find out the final program, it is best to follow the website of the Municipality of Baiano, the Facebook page of the Associazione Festa Santo Stefano Aps, and the local press of the Baianese area, which publishes details of the December 25th and 26th events every year.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Francesco Napolitano, in front of the Church of Saint Stephen, in Baiano (83022), in the province of Avellino. The procession travels through the streets of the historic center.
By car: take the Baiano exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow signs for the center. By train: Baiano is the terminus of the Circumvesuviana line from Naples (EAV), with the station just a few minutes' walk from the square. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about 30 km away.
Admission is free to all parts of the ritual and the procession. Any offerings are destined for the parish and the organizing association.
The felling and transport begin early in the morning: it is advisable to arrive early and dress in layers, as temperatures in December are cold. During the raising of the maio, please strictly respect the cordoned-off areas indicated by the security staff. Parking in the center is very limited on December 25th and 26th.
