From the 'Alzata del Pannetto' to the August 15th procession: three weeks of faith, tradition, and entertainment in the heart of Irpinia
The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Assunta is the quintessential identity-defining event for the Municipality of Avellino, the capital of the Province of Avellino in Campania. It is not just a single day of celebration, but a long festive period that begins at the end of July and spans the entire month of August, intertwining the city's Marian devotion with the major civil program known as Ferragosto avellinese. It is the time of year when the historic center fills up, neighborhoods reclaim their squares, and those who have emigrated return home to reconnect with their roots.
The true beginning of the festival is the Alzata del Pannetto, one of the most deeply rooted rites in Avellino's collective memory. The 'Pannetto' is a large banner bearing the image of the Virgin, a tradition dating back to the early 18th century: after the terrible plague epidemic that struck the city in the mid-17th century, the people of Avellino turned fervently to the Virgin, and the idea was born to create a large cloth to be displayed in the heart of the city as a sign of faith. In 1912, the bicentenary of the first hoisting was celebrated, testifying to the antiquity of the rite.
Even today, the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception preserves and passes down this custom. On the evening of the 'Alzata', after the solemn mass in the Cathedral, the Pannetto leaves the Archconfraternity church and leads a procession through Via Duomo, Piazza Amendola, Via Nappi, Via Episcopio, and Via Rifugio, ending in Piazza Libertà . It is accompanied by the confreres, the bishop, civil and military authorities, costumed participants of the Palio della Botte, flag-wavers, and drummers: a small historical pageant that gives the religious rite a spectacular and popular dimension.
The heart of the festival remains August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption. The day begins at dawn with celebrations in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Duomo that dominates the 'Terra' hill and houses the evocative Addolorata chapel in its crypt. In the evening, the statue of the Madonna leaves the Cathedral and travels through the main arteries of the city accompanied by thousands of the faithful, while much of the city center is closed to traffic for the occasion.
A detail dear to the people of Avellino concerns the gold crown that the statue wears during the procession: it was crafted with the offerings of the faithful and placed on the Madonna's head on August 14, 1966. For this reason, the eve of August 14th always holds special value, marked by prayers to the patroness and the city's floral tribute.
For years, the Municipality has built a vast summer program around the religious calendar, which in recent years has exceeded ninety events and involved hundreds of artists. The program is distributed across Piazza Libertà , Piazza Duomo, the Dogana terrace, the Villa Comunale, Via Dalmazia, the Teatro Gesualdo, and peripheral neighborhoods like Borgo Ferrovia and San Tommaso, with well-established formats:
Those arriving in Avellino in mid-August find a city that lives on the streets until late at night, with a rare balance between devotional life and secular celebration. The Assumption procession is an experience of collective participation rather than a tourist attraction, while the 'Ferragosto avellinese' reveals the capital in an unusually lively light. All this in a land, Irpinia, which is also one of the wine capitals of Southern Italy: Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo are produced just a few kilometers from the center and naturally accompany the festival evenings.
The historic center is compact and walkable: it is best to leave your car in external parking lots, especially on July 26th and August 15th, when municipal ordinances close Via Circumvallazione, Piazza Libertà , Piazza Amendola, and other procession routes to traffic. For the evening procession, it is best to arrive half an hour early and position yourself in front of the Cathedral, where the statue departs.
2026 marks an important anniversary for Avellino: the gold crown that the statue of the Assumption wears during the procession turns sixty, having been crafted with the offerings of the faithful and placed on the Madonna's head on August 14, 1966. The celebrations of the Diocese of Avellino therefore revolve around this anniversary.
The festivities opened on Sunday, July 26th, with the 'Alzata del Pannetto'. At 7:00 PM, the solemn mass in the Cathedral in honor of Saint Anne, then around 8:00 PM, the Pannetto left the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception church for a procession along Via Duomo, Piazza Amendola, Via Nappi, Via Episcopio, and Via Rifugio to Piazza Libertà , with the participants of the 'Palio della Botte', flag-wavers, and drummers. The large Marian banner was unfurled at the entrance to Via Nappi and remains on display throughout the festival. On July 29th, the artistic lighting of Via Nappi was switched on.
The civil calendar accompanies the religious one throughout the summer. On August 15th, the day of the procession, the city hosts the Bisceglie Musical Band in the morning and, in the evening, a concert by Ambrogio Sparagna with the Italian Popular Orchestra and Peppe Servillo, as well as a performance by Lumanera. The following day, Sunday, August 16th, Piazza Libertà hosts the most anticipated event of the festival, featuring BigMama, Fedez, Joseph and Frada, and Laura D'Agostino DJ.
By car: Avellino is served by the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction and the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Avellino Ovest and Avellino Est exits). During the festival, the center is closed to traffic: it is recommended to park in external areas and reach the center on foot.
By train and bus: The Avellino station is connected by regional bus lines to Naples, Salerno, and Benevento; numerous Air Campania routes connect the Irpinian capital with Naples in about an hour.
By plane: The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, about 50 km away.
Religious celebrations and the procession are free to attend. The events of the municipal summer program are usually free and held outdoors; for theater shows or any ticketed evenings, it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Avellino in advance.
The city offers hotels and bed and breakfasts in the center and along the Circumvallazione. In high season, and particularly around Ferragosto, booking well in advance is recommended; a good alternative is to stay in the villages of the Irpinia wine region, 20-30 minutes away by car.
