A month dedicated to the «Little Princess of Paradise» featuring pilgrimages, barefoot Battenti, and processions in Mugnano del Cardinale
In Mugnano del Cardinale, a small town in the Baianese area of the province of Avellino, Campania, the Feast of Saint Philomena is far more than a simple patronal festival: it is the very heart of the town's identity. It all began on August 10, 1805, when the local priest Father Francesco De Lucia brought the relics of the young martyr from Rome, discovered in 1802 in the Catacombs of Priscilla and donated by Pope Pius VII. Since that day, the town has been a destination for continuous pilgrimage, and the saint—invoked as the protector of the afflicted and couples longing for a child—is known far beyond the borders of Irpinia as the «Little Princess of Paradise».
The most striking moment occurs on the second Sunday of August, when the paranze (groups) of the Battenti of Saint Philomena reach the Sanctuary. Dressed in white and barefoot, wearing a red embroidered sash draped from the left shoulder to the right hip—adorned with symbols of martyrdom: palm, anchor, lily, and the PX monogram—the devotees cover the kilometers separating Cimitile from Mugnano on foot, alternating between running and walking without ever stopping. The pilgrimage began in 1934 to fulfill a vow. It is led by the capo paranza, the «head battente», who, at the sound of a bugle, shouts the ancient cry: «In the name of Saint Philomena… long live the dead… everyone to Mugnano!». The rhythmic, continuous beating of feet on the pavement—hence the name «battenti» (beaters)—accompanies the entire journey and does not cease until they arrive before the relics.
August 10th marks the anniversary of the translation and is the most anticipated date of the year, drawing faithful from all over Italy and abroad to the Sanctuary. On August 13th, the liturgical memorial of Saint Philomena is celebrated with solemn Masses presided over by the rector of the Sanctuary. Despite her removal from the Roman Martyrology in 1961, popular devotion has never waned; among her most famous devotees are the Curé of Ars, Pauline Jaricot, and Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
Alongside the liturgy runs the «E…state a Mugnano» calendar, promoted by the Union of Committees and Associations: musical evenings, performances, and cultural events enliven Piazza Umberto I and the historic center throughout the month. There are also guided tours of the Sanctuary, photography exhibitions dedicated to the town as a «land of faith and culture», and the convivial «Music, Song, and Sandwich» evenings, where Irpinian culinary tradition meets live music. The cycle concludes on August 31st with the evocative candlelight procession in honor of the saint.
Founded between 1580 and 1600 as the Church of Our Lady of Grace, the Sanctuary is instantly recognizable by its twin bell towers and illuminated dome. The Chapel of Saint Philomena, built between 1872 and 1877, houses the relics and the blessed oil linked to stories of healing passed down since 1805. In 2026, the devotion was enriched by a new event, the Historical Pageant of Saint Philomena, featuring ten living tableaux, drummers, flag-wavers, and performers in period costumes.
The 2026 calendar of Mugnano del Cardinale confirms the traditional structure of the festival and extends it throughout the month. It opens on Sunday, August 2nd with the enthronement of Saint Philomena and closes on Monday, August 31st with the evening candlelight procession.
The central weekend is that of August 9th, the second Sunday of the month: at dawn, the paranze of the Battenti arrive at the Sanctuary for the 6:30 AM Holy Mass, while in the afternoon, the Miraculous Statue travels through the streets of the town. August 10th, the anniversary of the translation of the relics in 1805, is accompanied by a guided tour of the Sanctuary and an evening concert, and on the evening of August 11th, the Adriano Celentano tribute show takes place.
On August 13th, the liturgical memorial of the saint, the Sanctuary fills with pilgrims once again. The secular part continues with the «Music, Song, and Sandwich» evenings on the 12th and 13th, and with the photography exhibition «Mugnano, land of faith and culture» on August 16th.
The program is part of the «E…state a Mugnano» schedule promoted by the Union of Committees and Associations; times and events are subject to change.
